Job descriptionOverview We are looking for a Systems / DOCSIS Engineer to join our Technology Integration team of individuals dedicated to evaluating, testing, and integrating new technology to the TDS network. They will be primarily focused on DOCSIS/video platforms and solutions that are part of our family of products.

The Systems Engineer works with significant autonomy and independence They are responsible for systems design, development, implementation, testing, and problem resolution. The scope of work typically includes major system projects that support company-wide business operations. As an experienced systems engineer and an experienced technical leader the position receives periodic mentoring, feedback, and supervision by management.

Will be working in a lab environment and systems may include servers (physical and virtual), operating systems, mass storage, commercial packaged software, or open-source software. Systems may be hosted at a TDS owned facility, a third party, or split across multiple facilities. This position has the opportunity to be permanently remote

Responsibilities

  • Integrates, implements, tests, and identifies defects on vendor provided software/hardware before being approved for customer consumption.
  • Platforms are frequently complex and require the integration of multiple vendor products with advanced skills and knowledge.
  • Develops the processes for the maintenance, administration, and capacity planning activities on systems to ensure continued reliability, performance, and security targets are met. Identifies system activities for automation.
  • Establishes the schedule of maintenance activities for the team to perform.
  • Will work in a cross-functional team environment preparing work estimates and project schedules for all technical work on projects. Projects frequently span multiple teams. Mentors team members in the development of work plans.
  • Leads work teams in resolving complex problems which are frequently unique, require creative problem solving and advanced technical skills, and frequently span multiple systems that may cross team boundaries.
  • Maintains authoritative knowledge of all systems within the scope of the team's responsibility. Provides a consultative role to business process owners in the use and modification of systems.
  • Maintains expert-level knowledge (SME) of system configuration and administration best practices, tools, and methodologies that are recognized within the company.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) –OR- 4+ years professional work experience.
  • 4+ years systems administration experience.
Other Qualifications
  • Experience with DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 networks is required
  • Experience with CMTS platforms such as Arris/CommScope, Cisco and Casa.
  • Working understanding of HFC architecture including RF performance, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge in cable CPE operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and registration process (template creation, firmware upgrades, etc.)
  • Knowledge in RF video delivery
  • Experience with QoS over DOCSIS (Service flows, UGS, etc.) is a plus

  • Experience of DOCSIS network security practices such as BPI+ is a plus
  • Knowledge of VOIP protocols such as NCS and SIP

  • Experience with IP network routing and switching

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies, practices, and tools.

  • Knowledge of system testing practices and tools.

  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques and tools.

  • Ability to travel as needed for company business and professional development.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for system implementations and resolving system problems.
