Attorney / Legal Counsel (Global Program) (Eugene, OR)

Oregon, Eugene 00000 Eugene USA

Vacancy expired!

Our Childrens Trust (OCT) is seeking to hire a full-time attorney / legal counsel (Attorney) for its Global Program, starting immediately. Our Childrens Trust is an all-woman-founded, human rights non-profit organization leading an innovative, youth-driven, and science-based campaign to secure the legal right to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate for present and future generations. OCT supports youth climate advocates, partner organizations, and volunteer and reduced-fee legal counsel and scientists in the U.S. and around the globe, in legal actions that seek legally-binding, countrywide and/or statewide science-based Climate Recovery Plans that will return atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations to levels below 350 ppm by the year 2100.

Position Summary. The Attorney works collaboratively with youth, OCT staff, partner attorneys, legal scholars, law clerks, NGO partners, scientists, and others to carry out the above-described campaign to compel government action in primarily non-U.S. jurisdictions, to effect systemic science-based climate recovery policies at all levels of government.

We are seeking candidates who have excellent legal skills and a can-do attitude. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is confident working independently and as part of a team. The Attorney will build on their prior knowledge and experience in non-U.S. and international climate litigation in developing, supporting and advancing ongoing and new global legal actions within OCTs Global Program. The Attorney will achieve this primarily through conducting legal and factual research, and drafting memoranda, pleadings, motions, and briefs. The Attorney will also work on outreach, partner development, media and communication activities, and will supervise law clerks. The position requires occasional evening and weekend work.

For U.S. lawyers, the position is based in Eugene, Oregon. Other locations will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates based outside the U.S. are strongly encouraged to apply for a contract position but must be willing to travel to Eugene, Oregon for a 3-month orientation at OCTs expense and with OCTs full support in securing an appropriate visa.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

Strong commitment to OCT mission.

Juris Doctor or equivalent.

Qualification for or license to practice in either a U.S. or non-U.S. jurisdiction required. Experience practicing and/or strong knowledge of laws in one or more non-U.S. jurisdiction(s) preferred.

Previous litigation experience essential. Litigation experience or demonstrable knowledge specifically in the area of human rights, international, constitutional and/or environmental law strongly preferred.

Previous experience and contacts in the field of global climate and/or human rights law preferred.

Compensation and Benefits. OCT offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The Attorney will be compensated commensurate with their experience and with the other members of our team. Employee benefits include employer-paid medical, vision, life, and disability insurance, retirement savings plan with employer match, paid vacation and holidays, and a relaxed work environment (albeit fast-paced).

We welcome, embrace, and respect diversity of people, identities, and cultures. We are committed to fostering an organizational culture of diversity and inclusion. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. OCT is an equal opportunity employer.

To Apply. Applicants should submit in a single PDF a cover letter, resume, law school transcript (for candidates who are less than 3 years out of law school) (unofficial copy okay), writing sample, and three references. Please put Attorney (Global Program) Application in the subject line of your email. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
