Overview:

Medical Billing Specialist supports the Billing Department by performing a wide variety of tasks. Some of the duties include data entry and updates to the electronic health record, insurance eligibility verification, processing claims for reimbursement, processing authorization requests, maintaining authorization spreadsheets and electronic records, reviewing and tracking clinical documentation, preparing and reconciling data for billing. Knowledge of insurance contracts and medical terminology/coding related to mental health services is desired. Requires medical billing or claims processing experience, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with Excel.

Responsibilities:

Enters required billing data into medical information system.

Creates and generates reports to extract and verify billing data.

Organizes, prepares, and maintains detailed billing records, reports and files for billing department.

Reviews and updates patient account charges, insurance data and demographic information in EHR software and researches missing or incorrect information that may affect claims submissions.

Assists clinicians with coding questions and ensures coding errors are resolved so claims can be generated correctly.

Bills primary and secondary insurance carriers. Works with insurance representatives to ensure claims are paid appropriately.

Generates patient billing and ensures that these individuals have the necessary service approval status and fee agreement on file.

Reconciles third party insurance remittances and cash application.

Assists clients with completing applications for the Oregon Health Plan.

Assists clients with financial agreements and setting up payment plans.

Verifies clients' private insurance coverage and works closely with insurance providers to determine type of services covered.

Processes month end close in MIS system; ensures that MIS data is consistent with agency's general accounting system.

Reviews and corrects encounter data and Medicare billing exceptions.

Qualifications:

Minimum three years of experience performing medical billing and accounts receivable required. Claims adjudication experience preferred.

Must possess a working knowledge of medical coding, terminology and billing practices. High school diploma or GED.

Applicants must be computer literate with a working knowledge of Excel and other MS Office applications. The successful candidate will possess strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrate exemplary attendance. Must handle shifting priorities and frequent distractions, as well as take direction, use initiative, and work independently. Excellent people-skills are required.

Must successfully pass state-required background check and DMV checks; possess a valid OR driver's license and a safe driving record to use agency or personal vehicle for required duties.
