Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in care and maintenance of plants in a greenhouse environment.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a working supervisor position, and will require working availability on Sat/Sun and some holidays

Confer with Nursery General Manager to determine plant order and propagation timelines

Develop plans and procedures to accomplish deadlines

Monitor and maintain all aspects of greenhouse operations and determine necessary requirements for

propagating, temperature control, IPM, thinning, weeding, irrigating, and fertilizing, based upon seasonality

and plant health

Create IPM monitoring plan, protocol and procedure for weeds, insects and pests

Collect seed and store seed

Oversee the proper sanitation and storage of all plant trays, containers, tools, and tables

Always keep greenhouses and walkways free of debris and customer ready

Participate in occasional farm events, educate staff and public about greenhouse plant care

Keep all greenhouse equipment in working order such as heaters, fans, watering equipment, refrigerators, etc.

and report any needed maintenance

Determine number and kind of workers needed to perform required work; schedule activities

Inspect work performed, observe instrument and gauge readings, ascertain condition of plants, and perform

duties to verify worker adherence to instructions

Train workers in work procedures, safety policies, and use of machinery and tools

Oversee packaging and transporting of plants to the field

Safely drive and operate farm machinery such as tractor, forklift, skid steer, atv/utv

Examine machinery to ascertain maintenance, repair, and replacement requirements; and supervise workers

engaged in machinery-maintenance activities

Issue tools to workers

Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product

Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew

Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in solving work problems

Maintain accurate time and production records

Perform activities of workers supervised

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise a total of 4+ employees in the greenhouses

Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Extensive knowledge of horticulture practices in a greenhouse environment

Knowledge of local climate needs and challenges in a greenhouse nursery

Be extremely prompt, organized, trustworthy, clean, motivated, good-natured, flexible, and dependable

Solid communication skills

Spanish language skills are preferred but not required

Pesticide Applicators License preferred but not required

Education and Experience

3-5 years' experience in greenhouse management

3-5 years' experience horticulture
