Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Librarian for Youth Programming is responsible for planning and implementing all programming for children, birth through 18 years and for providing a broad spectrum of library services to patrons at the Circulation Desk.

Note: Employees are expected to perform all responsibilities outlined in the job description. General Responsibilities:

Children/Teen/Family Programming - plan and execute programming within budgetary constraints that meets the needs and interest levels of the community's children/teens. Current/future programming is as follows:

o Story Time for 4 - 6 yrs; Lapsit for 2s & 3s; Preschool for 3 - 5 yrs; and Infant Storytime

o Summer Reading Club and associated summer programming

o National Library Week (as time and budget permit and in collaboration with other staff)

o Family Place programming for families with children birth-5 years.

o Tours for preschool & community groups (as time & budget permits)

o Crazy 8's Math for grades 2-5

o Chess Club

o Preschool Mother Goose Storytime

o Holiday, seasonal and craft programming for children/teens

o Tail Wagging Readers program using certified therapy dogs

o Upper Saucon Township Summer Recreation Program - Collaboration with Saucon Valley Community Center

o Makerspace and other programs that encourage/teach use of available and emerging technology for children/teens

Proposals for other special programs and/or modifications to existing programs are encouraged and may be submitted to the Library Director for approval. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining policies specific to youth programming.

Public Library/Public & Parochial School Partnership - Continue to build and maintain an ongoing partnership by informing school personnel of services/resources/programs available to teachers and students, co-participating in special projects, attendance at school librarians' meetings with Librarian for Youth Collection Development.

Budget Management - Work with Library Director to develop youth programming budget annually; submit invoices to Library Director; keep within budget when making purchases.

Collection Development - May make recommendations and/or requests to the Librarian for Youth Collection Development for specific circulating collection or professional collection items that would enhance youth programming; final decisions will be made by Librarian for Youth Collection Development and/or Library Director.

Supervisory Duties - Supervise and assign duties to any volunteers and interns that may be assisting with a project or program; provide support to staff, as needed, for children's programming.

Public/Staff Relations - Responsible for submitting pertinent information for advertising all youth programs/activities and policy changes that pertain to programming to calendar/newsletter editor for promotion in one or more of the following:

o Local newspapers (print & electronic) and classifieds (as needed)

o Radio/TV ads (as needed)

o Library calendar/newsletter - requires working closely with editor and Library Director to provide detailed copy and photographs electronically, meet all calendar/newsletter copy deadlines, provide editorial comment, and proofread final copy for errors. Calendar/newsletter is produced monthly.

o Website

o Partner with Librarian for Youth Collection Development to update library bulletin boards and other in-house display space

o Social networking sites, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Responsible for communicating programming information to staff that will enable them to answer questions from and assist patrons with program participation.

Public Services - Responsible for following written policies and maintaining an excellent level of customer service at all times, uphold the mission of the library, support and promote library programs, and follow procedures and policies as set forth by the Board of Directors and/or Library Director.

Clerical Services/Meeting Attendance - The following is required:

o Attendance at monthly staff meetings usually held on the first Wednesday of each month, 8:30-10AM.

o Participation in continuing education opportunities, such as workshops, seminars, and conferences at the request of the Director. Employees may also request the Director's permission to attend educational opportunities.

o Assist with closing of the library, other clerical duties as assigned.

o While keeping within budgetary constraints, purchase and maintain adequate supplies for youth programming; keep Children's Center supply closet and Youth Programming office in neat order.

o Responsible for maintaining attendance statistics for every youth program and reporting that information on a monthly basis to Library Assistant.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirement is Bachelor's degree in Library Science or Early Childhood/Elementary Education.

Experience with children's programming required.

Knowledge of child/teen development milestones and expectations preferred.

A minimum of one year's experience working/volunteering in a library or school setting is preferred.

Supervisory experience preferred.

Experience with budget preparation and management is preferred.

Requires excellent computer skills, i.e. proficiency with Windows & MAC OS on various electronic devices (computer, tablet, mobile phone, e-reader, etc.), Microsoft Office, Internet, social media applications; willingness to explore and learn new technologies as they become available and incorporate them in school-aged children/teen programming.

Requires excellent communication/interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing) to a diverse population with varying skill sets; previous experience working directly with the public preferred.

Requires excellent fine motor coordination, good visual skills, and ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, walk, lift up to 30lbs.

Requires good organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload effectively.

In compliance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Child Protective Services Law, Southern Lehigh Public Library requires employees to obtain/submit to the Library Director the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, and FBI Criminal Background Check within 90 days of beginning employment.
