Purpose:The hisotechnologist will process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.Responsibilities:

Demonstrates progression of skils towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

Supports academic mission of department.

Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years, or a B.S.degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years. Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist. 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:HTL (ASCP)- Am Society Clinical Pathology required within 1 year of hire.Clearances must be dated within 5 yrs
