DescriptionPurpose:Complete education and clinical training to progress to an Urgent Care Technician Specialist. Will complete didactic, clinical courses, and competencies of the Urgent Care Technician training program. Successfully obtains required certifications. Program consists of education and rotations within a clinic (Urgent Care or Express Care). Clinic rotations will begin with observation and progress to patient contact, registration, assessment, and patient care under the direction of an employed Urgent Care Technician, Senior, Educator or Clinical Leader.Responsibilities:Completes didactic, clinical courses, and competencies of the Urgent Care Technician training program.

Demonstrates cognitive competency of skills measured by case studies, quizzes, and examinations.

Successfully obtains the following certifications: Medical Assistant, CPR, DATIA Certified Professional Collector, NIOSH Spirometry, and CAOHC Occupational Hearing Conservation.

Accompany patient to the exam room and verify identity.

Collect patient information, past medical history, medication review and health screening per rooming guidelines.

Obtain vital signs, prepare patient and room, set up instruments and equipment needed to complete the visit. Assist provider with patient exam and procedures.

Complete orders and referrals.

Schedule patients for advanced care with specialists or clinical services.

Relay instructions, provides health education and plan of care to patient/family.

Performs direct patient care and assists with a variety of orthopedic and wound related care including clean and dress wounds, apply and remove sutures/staples, splinting and application of prefabricated durable medical equipment.

Instruct patient on care for their injury and use of durable medical equipment.

Administer medications, vaccines and breathing treatments according to provider order and following departmental protocols.

Perform medical testing, including but not limited to EKG, audiometry screening and spirometry.

Perform full audiogram and screening audiometry following the Counsel for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation.

Perform spirometry following National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards.

Follow protocols for specialized occupational health physicals and surveillance programs.

Conduct respiratory fit testing.

Follow established procedures for the collection and processing of specimens/cultures for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample.

Maintain competencies in techniques to obtain specimens via nasopharyngeal, nasal, oropharynx, capillary, wound, urine, etc.

Perform point of care testing according to protocol.

Perform drug and alcohol testing following chain of custody protocols and approved standards for urine, saliva, hair, breath, blood sample collection.

Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable results and follow-up according to established protocols.

Adhere to established laboratory policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance and safety.

Screen and monitor acuity of patients within the waiting area.

Prioritize patients based on acuity and type of service. Informs care team of patients in distress.

First responder in emergent situations.

Maintain and clean rooms and equipment according to protocols and manufacture guidelines.

Comply with equipment maintenance, completes logs and calibrations according to protocols.

Comply with regulatory agencies. Reports equipment malfunction or concerns to clinical leader. Stocks supplies and reports low inventory according to protocols.

Provide warm greeting for all patients, guiding them through use of self-arrival technology or by leading them through the registration process and enrollment in MyUPMC patient portal.

Register occupational health patients following employer and workman compensation panel guidelines.

Obtain, verify, and update demographic, financial and guarantor information into the scheduling/financial system.

Confirm/verify insurance benefits with the appropriate carrier via online verification systems or telephone inquiries.

Obtain signature of patient or family member for consent to treatment and financial responsibility following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules and regulations.

Collect co-payments and any other applicable payments at point of service.

Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent is required.

Must have basic computer skills.Must be 18 years or older.

Ability to multi-task, work independently and with a team of care givers.

Must be able to adapt to variable workload and work with a diverse patient population.

Must be able to remain calm and respond to emergent situations.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within 30 days of employment

Certified Professional Collector within 6 months of employment

Spirometry Certification within 1 year of employment

Occupational Hearing Conservation Certification within 1 year of employment
