As the complexity and the importance of improving the developer experience increase, we need a solution architect that will design the future state architecture and integration of 3rd party tools used to build software across all divisions at Vanguard.

Duties and Responsibilities

To assist in the execution of the vision, strategic direction, and initiative roadmap for strategic, business technology projects. To help define the reference and implementation architectures for strategic, business technology projects. To persuade and influence Business and Information Technology (IT) leaders on the architectural direction for strategic, business technology projects.
  • Provides the architectural leadership in shaping strategic Software Engineer tools, with an emphasis on application development tools and architecture. Utilizes domain knowledge and application portfolio knowledge to play a key role in defining the future state of our software development environment.
  • Utilizes a broad and deep understanding of the competitive landscape and business unit strategies to provide context for architectural decision making.
  • Within area of responsibility, continuously pursues strong knowledge of business technology solutions and maintains understanding of applicable technologies, tools, and services:
  • Establishes working relationships with appropriate business technology solution providers (e.g., AWS, Jira, Planview, etc.).
  • Leverages knowledge capital available through subscription research services that target business technology solutions (e.g., Forrester on Digital Business, Cutter on investment management, etc.).
  • Leverages the Internet and trade periodicals that focus on the contemporary, competitive, business technology issues within the financial industry.
  • Attends financial industry and technical conferences and engages in associated activities (e.g., conducting presentations, leading workshops, etc.).
  • Defines reference and cloud architectures.
  • Produces technology roadmaps in support of SI's application portfolio vision and strategy
  • Ensures application implementation solutions support the business objectives (asset gathering, cost optimization, Crew satisfaction and Net Promoter Score NPS), as appropriate.
  • Participates in governance team discussions and provides a strong voice on critical decisions including technical debt resolution.
  • Establishes relationships with senior IT and Business leaders for the purpose of advancing proposed Software Development Tools.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

What it takes:
  • Ability to shape a strategic application architecture for third-party products in the Cloud
  • Ability to communicate architectural vision to leaders
  • Basic knowledge of the Atlassian Tool Suite (including JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo, and Crowd) and how the products interact with each other.
  • Domain knowledge of hosting platforms both in the Cloud and on-prem, such as VMWare ESXi, Amazon EC2, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, Lambda, and the desire to learn about new platform options through engagement with vendors and online resources
  • Understanding of Software as a Service vendors and how to integrate their capabilities with hosted application portfolio
  • Desire to keep up with industry architectural trends through channels such as podcasts, blogs, etc.
  • Ability to create technology roadmaps for supported applications that includes knowledge of alternatives to potentially replace some applications
  • Ability to monitor implementation teams to ensure that architectural direction is followed through implementation and delivery
  • Ability to interact and communicate architectural vision to third-party consultants that can perform implementation activities
  • Ability to navigate onboarding of new applications and services
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of training and experience. Minimum of five years developer, or operations, experience.
  • Basic knowledge of network architectures and how they impact the ability for a vendor application to communicate.

Nice to Have:
  • API Gateway domain knowledge is a nice-to-have, but basic understanding of what an API Gateway is and how it can host application API's for automation purposes is a must.
  • Understanding of Event-driven architectural practices and some of the tools available to facilitate
  • Knowledge of synchronous and asynchronous application integration techniques that include the use of Pub-Sub message delivery, and message queues

Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years relevant work experience.
