Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer to join the global Polymers, Adhesive and Coatings Center of Excellence (PACE) in Labels and Graphics Materials (LGM). You will support business growth and work to expand Avery Dennison’s driven advantage in the area of process technology related to polymer synthesis and processing. Specifically, the individual will work across our global businesses and technical teams to identify, develop and deploy process technologies, as well as support multi-functional teams in the commercialization of new product chemistries. The individual will collaborate directly with product development scientists, pilot facility teammates, operations associates, third party contract manufacturers, and equipment vendors.

Representative Responsibilities:

  • Develop and introduce new process technologies to Avery Dennison. Devise strategies to evaluate and assess new process technologies that allow for introduction of new product innovations to the market.

  • Provide technical feedback for business case development and assist with presentations to senior management

  • Work with a team to complete feasibility assessment of ideas, provide technical leadership to define the scope of work and identify alternate process technologies. This may require estimating potential investment opportunities and evaluation of prospective scale up partners.

  • Participate in new process technology development, specifying new equipment and ensuring that good engineering practices are implemented.

  • Guide project teams performing technical platform research aligned with business needs. Develop and implement comprehensive technical project plans. Determine resources, actions, and timelines for projects.

  • Collaborate with corporate intellectual property counsel regarding right to market, patent applications and office actions. Assist other scientists in patent activities and filings.

  • Progressive problem solver with strong implementation skills who can anticipate potential obstacles.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years in chemical scale up and new process technology implementation.

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, material science, or polymer science.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Well-developed time leadership skills with a comfort in leading multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and develop influential relationships at multiple levels within the organization and lead in a positive, collaborative manner.

Preferred Experience:

  • An advanced degree in chemical or polymer engineering is preferred.

  • Commercial scale polymer processing experience is preferred. Pilot and lab experience.

  • Scale up of unit operations (e.g. devolatilization) related to polymer processing.

  • Hands-on development and operation of on-line/in-line/at-line process analyzers.

  • Reactor design, equipment installation and qualification, control system integration.

  • 100% solids adhesive (or polymer compounding and formulation) experience.

  • Understanding of green polymer science, biodegradation, and compositiblity.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in using statistical design of experiments.

  • Modeling of chemical reactions and physical (especially separation) processes.

Other:

  • Experience with laboratory safety, Process Safety Management (PSM) and chemical hazards.

  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and handle changing priorities.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally 10-20% of time.

Actual title will be commensurate with degree and years of experience.
