Full Stack Developer to Improve Democracy One Lease at a Time (Remote)

Pennsylvania, State college 00000 State college USA

Vacancy expired!

MassLandlords, Inc. is a nonprofit startup with a mission to create better rental housing. We help new, current, and prospective owners run profitable, compliant, quality businesses. Over 1,800 member businesses pay annual dues for our networking, training, and advocacy. We have 6,000 monthly newsletter subscribers. We have over 200,000 annual website visitors. We have grown at 25% a year since we launched in 2014. We use score voting to democratically set organization direction. Our Board of Directors are democratically elected. Every policy we advocate for is good renters and landlords alike.

We need a full stack developer to carry our mission forward. Our custom-developed software converts visitors to dues-paying members, converts members to Property Rights Supporters (who give extra to fund our policy work), and runs the core services that we make available to members and general public. We need you to expand our democratic engagement processes, launch the first-ever state-specific test of basic legal competence to be a landlord, and help us scale to be ten times more impactful.

This job requires full stack development, including but not limited to:

Custom software development,

Server ops,

Dev ops, including a test and production release process,

Maintenance of existing systems and APIs, including updating plugins and patching bugs,

Maintaining server security and responding to changes in the landscape, and

Revision control and code commenting.

We are looking for a full stack developer to make substantial contributions to our core services:

the Certified Massachusetts Landlord™ and first-in-the-nation state specific test of basic legal competence for landlords,

downloadable rental forms,

custom-built service provider directory,

publication of professional how-to articles and policy pieces through our website, email, and occasionally SMS,

message boards,

live networking and training events, and

consensus-oriented policy advocacy including score voting and annual elections.

Required skills and qualifications:

Ubuntu, wordpress, php, aws lightsail or ec2, rackspace, apache, mysql, linux (LAMP), or the ability to learn whatever is missing,

Good written and/or verbal communication,

Be able to diagnose outages, security vulnerabilities, warnings,

Git,

Strong interest in residential rental real estate, good governance reforms, and/or housing policy,

Asana or other collaboration software a plus,

Google drive a plus, and

Show us your open source contributions a plus.

Position will be paid $35 to $40/hr depending on experience. Long term average should be 10 hours per week. Wide discretion over personal schedule, work whenever you like, must be available for one 30 minute synchronous communication per week (e.g., call, chat). Hours might grow as we grow.

This position reports to the Executive Director.

Please submit a resume, a short cover letter explaining your interest, and a link to your github or gitlab account (even if newly created for this application). Use the email subject “Coding for housing.”
