Position Description: General Summary Statement

Resolves issues related to the coordination, control, design, support, and operation of specialized components of a data network such as Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs). Configures, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, and tunes network infrastructure such as routers, switches, gateways, firewall systems, multi-function switches, and end offices, signaling transfer points. Participates in network planning for network infrastructure enhancements & expansions. Documents work and maintains required documentation. Escalates appropriately to Senior Network Technician or Manager when a problem, issue, or configuration change arises. Also escalates to manager when additional support is needed in order to resolve an issue.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities• Skilled in time, priority and task management • Interpersonal skills to interact with customers and team members• Good leadership skills to guide and mentor the work of less experienced personnel• Ability to anticipate problems, resolve ambiguity and take decisive action• Ability to work independently and as part of a team• Good ability to analyze and solve problems using analytical and creative problem solving skills• Ability to convey a strong presence, professional image, and deal confidentiality with technical problems• Proactive in identifying areas of network improvement and need for Network capacity expansion• Willingness to travel within Penn Medicine sites.• Proactively seeks improvements in customer service and system availability/reliability • Assists in the establishment of processes and standards to ensure efficiencies and effectiveness of IT resources • Strong interpersonal and communications working with team members, other departments and external customers on occasion. • 7x24 on-call rotation for support of production systems. (approx 2 weekend/mo) • Under the guidance of IT representatives, duties may include some or all of the following: receiving assets, moving equipment within and/or between facilities, staging equipment for build/image activity, interviewing clients as part of pre-deployment asset discovery, executing equipment replacement activity, updating asset management system to reflect work performed, monitoring daily activity, installing and maintaining network hardware and software, resolve network communication problems independently, May also include other administrative duties • Manage incoming and outgoing assets. Prepare systems for deployment • Scan existing asset for applications and settings • Interview clients to identify special considerations for when maintenance / upgrades affect their areas.• Use diagnostic tools to monitor network activity • Collaborate with teammates to identify process improvements • Escalate quickly when issues arise. Assist other Engineers and technicians as needed • Enforces the Penn network security and installation procedures.• Provides technical support to network users and must be able to help nontechnical people understand and use complex equipment and software

Education Training and Experience• Associate's degree with at least two years of coursework in computer sciences.• Bachelor's degree preferred• Minimum one-year experience with direct client interaction• 2+ years of experience in data, voice or video networks• Experience working with network software and hardware• Experience working with network systems, networking principles• Experience working with at least two network systems (e.g., Cisco, Avaya)• Experience working with proprietary software and hardware

Licensure/Certification The Penn network includes system installations at multiple Penn Health System remote sites. This requires the use of a personal or Penn vehicle while conducting Hospital business. Must possess a valid (Class C) Pennsylvania driver's license, adequate auto insurance coverage, and an acceptable driving record.
