Central to these company-building activities is the role of the Lead Product Designer.Lead Product Designers are new to people management. They are creative, thoughtful individuals with an expert aptitude for making, prototyping, producing best-in-class experiences, improving workflows, and paying attention to detail. They are passionate individuals that oversee small Product Design teams of up to three (3) people. Lead Product Designers will themselves receive mentorship and guidance as they create career pathing plans, complete performance reviews, and generally assist their team in producing best-in-class experiences.

DesignWith full autonomy and while mentoring others,
  • A UI/UX Software Engineer who is a natural at understanding human-computer interaction design (HCID)
  • Uses human-centered design methods to frame and validate initial concepts, develop early-stage prototypes, and iterate on developed solutions
  • Provides advanced human-centered design deliverables on assigned products, including interaction guides, user interface guides, interface design files, wireframes, documentation, and interactive mockups using tools like Figma, InVision, etc.
  • Drives UX research on patterns in the market and our users’ habits.
  • Define UI and UX strategies based on project’s target goals.
  • Implements new and improved design patterns, methods, and processes
  • Working knowledge of multiple functional areas such as product management and engineering
  • Works around difficult design, resource, time, and technical limitations with ease
  • Design, build, and maintain highly reusable JavaScript, HTML and CSS code.
  • Advocates for users, considering their needs and wants
  • Builds appropriate project plans, goals and work plans to frame early-stage efforts in an actionable and relevant way
  • Able to lead stakeholder sessions, user groups, and participatory design sessions to capture ideas, feedback, and requirements

LeadershipWith oversight and guidance,
  • Guide team members at varying career levels across their respective products of varying complexity and size.
  • Guide, coach, and mentor your team through discussions, engagements, and other activities to always leave your stakeholders with the best impression of what the team has to offer.
  • Demonstrate the deep listening skills and empathy needed to guide your team members in a manner that best suits their learning style.
  • Assist team members in building relationships with appropriate leaders throughout UPMC Enterprises and the greater UPMC organization.
  • Create and guide individual career paths and growth plans.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and recommend team members for promotion.
  • Define quarterly goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
  • Report team progress, needs, and roadblocks to senior and, potentially, executive leadership.
  • Draft staffing recommendations to senior and, potentially, executive leadership.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Centered Design or related field (i.e., Human-Computer Interaction, Communication/Graphic Design, Cognitive Psychology, Interaction Design, Human Factors, etc.) required or comparable degree or experience. Advanced degree preferred
  • A portfolio of expert and multidisciplinary work and that demonstrates both JavaScript proficiency and understanding of SOLID design principles.
  • Expert with CSS, CSS extension languages and CSS preprocessor tools
  • Expert using HTML and best practices and with responsive design (mobile browsers, etc.) and designing for accessibility (A11y)
  • Expert in designing interfaces and click-through prototypes for mobile/web applications including complex UX workflows and feature suites.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a UI/UX designer and in designing, delivering, and continuously improving consumer-facing products in a marketplace preferred and as a front-end developer using Angular, React, View or other related technology preferred.
  • Is visually and verbally articulate; including the ability to lead interactive group development sessions
  • No people management experience required
