Vanguard Performance Testing Engineer III

The candidate will be a member of Vanguard's Mainframe Services Team and will be responsible for performance and capacity planning for the mainframe platform. This position will work closely with Vanguard's system engineering, application development, and data base administration teams, as well as the leadership team to help determine the need for when and how much capacity is needed to support the enterprise. In addition to strong analytical skills, the candidate will need expert working knowledge of SAS, PERFMAN, BMC MAINVIEW, FreezeFrame, zPCR, SCRT, Splunk, JCL, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must be tenacious in solving problems to improve service levels and a desire to improve the consumption on capacity to assist in reducing the run rate of the platform. This high-energy, results oriented job requires a balance of strong technical skills and business acumen to assist with ever changing IT conditions in support of business and client demands.

This individual will need to maintain, improve, and document the processes that are used to collect data and support the tools that are used for analysis and dashboarding of mainframe data. They will be expected to collaborate with the other IT divisions to model mainframe workloads to assist in decision making for the transformation of the application portfolio Must be able to write, update and maintain programs used for SMF data processing, perform analysis and make recommendations to the leadership team on the path forward. Must be able to lead, plan, organize, direct, develop, and control technical aspects of assigned projects and perform the steps necessary to drive desired outcomes as directed by management.

In this role, you will:
  • To determine how a system performs in terms of responsiveness and stability under a particular workload.
  • Serve to investigate, measure, validate or verify other quality attributes of the system, such as scalability, reliability and resource usage.
  • Provide performance engineering recommendations to improve overall performance. This staff member completes theses activities at an expert level under regular direction.

This role requires a wide variety of strengths and capabilities, including:
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication and written skills
  • Self-driven, independently motivated
  • Strong analytical skillset
  • Must be able to present to senior leadership
  • 10+ years of experience in z/OS performance & capacity management
  • Current knowledge of z/OS and z15 hardware
  • Strong experience in a SYSPLEX environment, working knowledge of WLM
  • Strong performance tuning experience in a large scale DB2 shop
  • Ability to write and maintain programs to process SMF data (SAS, MXG, SQL)
  • Ability to support batch jobs (JCL) within daily, weekly and monthly job cycles
  • Provide technical expertise throughout the software lifecycle including design, implementation, and delivery
  • Monitor systems and application performance as well as managing risk to the environment
  • Ability to lead, drive problem diagnostics, and resolution of performance issues
  • Working knowledge of BMC MAINVIEW, FreezeFrame and PERFMAN
  • Expert working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of Desktop Tools (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
