Position Purpose

The Dispensing Pharmacist performs all the essential functions of an on-site consultant pharmacist and staff functions of a pharmacist in a closed-door long-term care pharmacy. The day to day functions of this position with be delegated to the Clinical/Staff Pharmacist by the Pharmacist-in-Charge based on operational needs.

Primary Position Functions
  • Develop, implement, and maintain clinical programs for internal and external clients.
  • Perform utilization management reviews (i.e. prior authorizations, step therapy, quantity limits, etc.) and make determinations based on medical necessity and currently benefit design.
  • Conduct individual and population-based medication therapy management reviews to ensure appropriate medication utilization.
  • Involved with research regarding new medications and evaluate updates to existing medications.Present drug review summary and make recommendations to P&T.
  • Actively contribute to plan design development projects and make clinical recommendations to ensure appropriate consideration of safety and efficacy is addressed by alternative benefit options.
  • Innovate with new ideas to create a greater exchange of communication surrounding clinical issues, the impact they have on plans and potential management strategies to employ.
  • Represent the company at internal and external meetings.Identify opportunities to present differential value proposition to the external market and submit speaker proposal(s) to promote PharmaStar as the PBM of choice.
  • Identify and understand client objectives for spend management balanced with clinical outcomes and recommend initiatives to address the goals.
  • Lead the development and participate in delivery of regular client reviews.
  • Evaluate pharmacoeconomic impact of new and emerging therapies and drug spend for client consultation.
  • Assist in formulary development for Medicare Part D and commercial business.This includes translating a full formulary into a PDL and recommending publishable standards.
  • Implement new initiatives related to CMS requirements.
  • Develop, implement and update clinical policies and procedures as it relates to responsibilities assigned.
  • Provide support in clinical evaluation for sales team to assist in growing the book of business.
  • Coordinate with an interdisciplinary care team to support pharmacy function of that team.

Secondary Position Functions:
  • Ensures accurate, efficient, timely and compliant medication distribution and fulfillment for patients.
  • Provides timely final approval for dispensed prescriptions assuring the correct drug, dosage form, quantity, days' supply, number of refills and packaging is dispensed to the correct patient and within guidelines. Responsible for proper labeling and warnings as well as verifying appropriate directions for use per prescription.
  • Oversees operation of machines that sort, dispense and label medications, and verifies the results of their operations.
  • Assures the delivery method selected with properly identified delivery location (center or home).
  • Plans, implements, and maintains procedures for mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals, according to policy and legal requirements, to ensure quality, security, and proper disposal.
  • Works to ensure proper and compliant billing and record keeping of medications dispensed and shipped.
  • Oversees proper storage and security conditions for the drugs.
  • Oversees ordering, labeling, and counting stock of medications, chemicals, and supplies; and enters inventory data into the computer. Establishes a routine check of expiration dates on stocked drugs. Ensures controlled substance record keeping.
  • Receives and stores incoming supplies, verifies quantities against invoices, and addresses stock needs or shortages.
  • Prepares and processes medical insurance claim forms and records.
  • Oversees Pharmacy Technicians to ensure compliance to company and regulatory guidelines (such as FWA, HIPAA and applicable pharmacy law), quality and efficiency of patient care and continued career development for the technicians.
  • Ensures that patient care decisions and actions as well as coding/billing are properly documented using proprietary software system.
  • Provides reports and analysis to management as requested as necessary to monitor and improve patient care and center operations.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS degree in Pharmacy or Pharm.D
  • Three to five years of experience as a clinical or long-term care pharmacist is preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Experience & Training
  • 2+ years' experience in pharmacy distribution and packaging, with at least some exposure to geriatrics/chronic care.

Specific Skills:
  • Strong analytical skills and good clinical judgment.
  • Strong technical skills (to monitor and make suggestions about proprietary system development/enhancements).

Licensing/Certification:
  • Must have active Pharmacist License in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in good standing.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Works in a normal office environment or as telecommuter.
  • Ability to sit on a continuous basis.Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, and reaching.
  • Continuous lifting and carrying of less than 10 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent manipulation of objects for use of the computer and other office equipment.
  • Ability to provide tactful responses under stressful situations & conditions.
  • Ability to maintain the highest standard of confidentiality.
