Job Description

SUMMARY

The Fire Assay Technician performs Fire Assay techniques, following written work instructions, to determine various mineral and metal concentrations in samples.

REPORTING LINE

Directly reports to Assistant Branch Manager, MIN or to a Branch Manager, MIN

Dotted reporting line to the Operations Manager, MIN

JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs Fire Assay techniques, such as fluxing, fusing, and cupelling samples according to written procedures.

Performs routine equipment maintenance under direction of a supervisor

Completes and maintains accurate, up to date work order documentation, fusion sheets and logs.

Follows all Quality system protocols and reports discrepancies to the supervisor.

Maintains a clean work environment, which includes proper disposal of crucibles, cupels and fire assay lead wastes.

Organizes and labels waste disposal.

Responsible for the safe keeping, accuracy and completeness (including tracking/reasons for any changes).

Works independently or together with a supervisor and other analysts on a regular basis and must meet the required sample turnaround time with expected quality of results as it directly impact client.

May be required to process multiple samples utilizing similar testing methods.

May be asked to work in other areas of the Geochemistry laboratory sections as needed.

May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.

Adheres to internal standards, policies and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

· High School/GED or equivalent AND

· Minimum 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting with direct experience in Fire Assay

Preferred:

· Associate degree in Science AND

· 2 years of experience in Fire Assay

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Language Skills: English – Intermediate level of proficiency required

Mathematical Skills: Intermediate level of skills required

Reasoning Skills/Abilities: Advanced level required

Computer Skills: Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel.

Ability to multi-task the different fire assay stations to ensure production proceeds in a timely/efficient manner.

Must have good hand/eye coordination to make accurate fusion pours without affecting quality.

TRAVEL

No travel required.

EQUIPMENT

Position requires regular use and manipulation of Fusion Furnaces, Cupelation Furnace, Annealing Furnace, Balances, including micro balances, and multi pour systems.
