SummaryThe primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, commissioned by the National Park Service with responsibility for performing duties including detection and investigation of violations of the Federal criminal laws, apprehension and detention of violators, the protection of life and property, and enforcement of all applicable laws, rules, and regulations protecting and ensuring the safe use of National Park resources.ResponsibilitiesThe individuals selected for these positions will perform a variety of resource and visitor protection duties including but not limited to: enforcement of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies, vehicle and foot patrol, front country patrol, back country and wilderness patrol, emergency response, emergency medical services, search and rescue, visitor stewardship and orientation, wilderness management, boundary enforcement, protection of natural and cultural resources (wildlife, plants, archeological sites, historic building) and wild land fire suppression. Monitors and inspects use of various resources associated with Jewel Cave such as the park's visitor center, cave entrances, storage buildings, roads, contractor jobsites within the park and contractor work performed. Advises contractors and subcontractors, employees, and park users on problems such as violations of access to the cave. Performs assigned resource management and resource protection tasks and duties supporting an ongoing construction project inside Jewel Cave. Responsible for controlling access and maintaining accountability and records of contractors and subcontractors entering and exiting Jewel Cave. Assisting with escorting oversized vehicles/ conduct road closures if necessary leading to the construction jobsite outside of the cave entrance. Takes appropriate remedial action to correct observed resource problems. For more serious violations, recommends and participates with the park's chief ranger in the development and implementation of plans to address the problem.Assists in preliminary investigations of felonies and other crimes and violations of park rules. Prepares reports and interviews witnesses. Preserves, documents, and gathers evidence at minor crime and accident scenes.Serve as a member of all-hazard operations, e.g., search and rescue. Provide emergency medical services. The specific emergency medical certification required for this position is at a minimum of an Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B). Adherence to specific safety procedures and other precautions is required.Utilizing knowledge of the park's natural and cultural resources, the principal laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the protection of these resources, and the legal jurisdictional responsibilities of the park, and the techniques and methods of law enforcement, crime prevention, deterrence, and investigations, educates contractors and subcontractors about the parks resources and requirements pertaining to their use. This includes specialized duties directed toward protection of the park's natural resources inside and outside of Jewel Cave. Long periods of surveillance work will require extended periods of time inside Jewel Cave standing, walking or sitting.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentUS Citizenship required. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile A valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit, and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include law enforcement or investigative work; performing law enforcement duties for the protection, conservation, use, and management of natural and/or cultural resources in park areas or similar operations, which involved the application of law enforcement authorities and procedures to protect visitors and resources, archaeological or historical preservation research work, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of graduate education in a directly-related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement, police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. In some assignments, heavy packs may have to be carried long distances. Physical fitness requirements must be met prior to and on a continuing basis during employment. There is a high-stress component to much of the incumbent's work assignments. Working Conditions: While some work may be performed in an office setting, most of the work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. The work is performed day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Frequently exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations in emergency types of situations requiring use of a wide range of personal protective gear, adherence to specific safety procedures, and other precautions. Long periods of surveillance work may be required in cramped, or unpleasant locations and under unpleasant conditions. Shift work is often required.
