Job Title: Canine Supervisor

Job Classification: FT, hourly, non-exempt

Job Relationships: Reports to Deputy Director

Job Summary: The Canine Supervisor has a complete knowledge of the policies and procedures of the McKamey Animal Center and has a strong positive working relationship with the Canine Caretaker staff as a developer of a quality caretaker team. The Canine Supervisor will oversee Caretakers who are working with the health, well-being and general care of Center canines. Responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people while providing humane handling and care for all Center canines on a daily basis.

Salary: $12-13/hour, non-exempt

JOB DUTIES:

1. Train, supervise, manage, motivate and evaluate canine caretaker staff:

ïƒ Train staff side by side on proper procedures. Go through the training document with them line by line. Update the training policies as new processes and procedures are put into place. Complete regular and full reviews of employee's training progress.

ïƒ Address work performance issues with caretakers through progressive disciplinary action, following McKamey's procedures on staff discipline.

ïƒ Fill open caretaker positions by reviewing applications, interviewing candidates, and working side-by-side with candidates in working interviews.

ïƒ Ensure that all canine areas are adequately staffed, posting a written schedule with at least a 24 hour notice and ensuring all vacation requests, absences, and schedule changes are covered before approving them.

2. Opening Procedures:

ïƒ Arrive 10 / 15 minutes before opening and pull team of caretakers together to discuss shift staffing and any issues.

ïƒ Conduct a facility walk through of all canine housing areas, checking equipment, maintenance, and sanitation as evaluating the health and behavior of all Center canines,

ïƒ Make special assignments for caretakers in these areas as needed.

ïƒ Assist with the daily care of animals.

ïƒ Check all supplies and restock/re-order as needed.

3. Animal Care:

ïƒ Supervise and monitor canine caretaker staff for completion of daily tasks and assign additional duties if necessary.

ïƒ Provide care for canines housed at the Center. Perform daily work according to established methods (this includes cleaning cages, washing/drying bedding, sterilizing food bowls/toys/equipment, bathing/exercising and moving animals).

ïƒ Assure all animals are cared for regarding food, water, daily exercise, enrichment and appropriate living conditions.

ïƒ Monitor the health and behavior of the animals.

ïƒ Assist caretaker staff with "trouble" areas or animals.

ïƒ Socialize the animals and create a positive living environment.

ïƒ Assist in conducting behavior assessments and health screenings on incoming animals.

ïƒ Maintain a clean, orderly, appropriately stocked work environment.

ïƒ Monitor and maintain hard copy and digital records on the animals.

ïƒ Perform euthanasia as needed.

ïƒ Assist the Assessment Lead with the flow and movement of animals within the Center (between wards, departments, and categories) as requested or needed.

4. Rescue, Transfer & Transport Programs:

ïƒ Recruit, interview, screen and approve reputable rescue transfer and transport partners.

ïƒ Work with all partners to place animals that qualify as rescue candidates

ïƒ Maintain lines of communication with rescue, transfer & transport groups to follow progress of animals to promote success stories to the local media.

ïƒ Schedule and coordinate the mass transport program, abiding by all state and federal guidelines for transport as well as each destination shelter's requirements.

ïƒ Ensure relationship building in the community and with animal partnerships using clear and effective communication and professionalism

ïƒ Research other programs that would insure the continual movement of animals out of the Center

5. Closing Procedures:

ïƒ Walk through and make sure all areas and animals are in satisfactory condition (clean, fed and watered).

ïƒ Release staff after area is checked.

ïƒ Check and lock all doors in canine areas as needed plus insure all lights are OFF in all canine areas.

ïƒ Make sure all radios and small appliances are off and UNPLUGGED in all canine areas.

ïƒ Check with the Deputy Director to see if all other areas are completed and assist where help is needed

6. Client Care:

ïƒ Serve as a representative of the Center, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, staff, and animals.

ïƒ Attend special events as assigned.

ïƒ Follow guidelines concerning safety and handling of hazardous materials.

ïƒ Work collaboratively to ensure that each visitor, animal, and staff member has a positive experience while onsite.

7. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience: College/associates degree and/or two years' experience as a supervisor in an animal shelter or related work. Minimum two years of working and interacting with the public desired. Individual will have an interest in animal care and welfare. Show an energetic, positive and upbeat outlook. Training and certification as a Euthanasia Technician during the next McKamey sponsored class.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:

Show strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to relate and confer with the managers and associate staff in a positive and constructive way; exercise good judgment when dealing with the public and when making decisions in the absence of a supervisor. Ability to make sound judgments and work independently as well a team setting in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands. Demonstrate written and verbal communications of a professional standard. Support the mission of the McKamey Animal Center and be an effective representative the Center's position on issues. Self-motivated to keep informed of, and clearly and accurately relay facts about, the Center's news, events, and informational material. A basic knowledge of animal health, care and welfare and ability to work with animals of all temperaments. Strong animal handling skills with a good knowledge of animal breeds and colors is desirable. Attention to detail. A "can do" team player attitude and willingness to go the extra mile. Complete flexibility with the job, work schedules, and the overall staff team needs. Enjoy handling a variety of tasks.

OTHER:

Must be at least 18 years of age, valid Driver's License and insurable driving record. Training completed as soon as possible to become a licensed Euthanasia Technician.

Work Environment: Exposure to high noise levels, "zoonotic" diseases, and animal bites/scratches when handling animals; exposure to cleaning agents; exposure to all weather conditions when outdoors; bending, reaching, and walking up to 8 hours a day.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance; potential for standing/walking up to ten hours a day; scrubbing kennels and mopping; sitting at a desk; driving a car; performing physical examinations on animals; animal restraint; handling syringes and needles.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

The McKamey Animal Center conducts criminal background checks & proof of a current tetanus vaccination.
