Job Summary: The Specialty Dental Assistant supports the clinical treatment care of our specialty patients in our Orthodontic, Oral Surgery, Pediatric (including OR) and Endodontic areas. Other functions include sustaining patient comfort, managing supplies, listening to patients needs and educating them on dental procedures, working efficiently to maintain doctors schedule and adhere to all OSHA safety policies and procedures. Expectations include: organize and maintain lab equipment, take and pour impressions, take bitewings, PAs, Panos, Cephs, intra and extra oral photos, provide comprehensive pre-op and post instruction to patients.
The ideal Specialty Dental Assistant candidate should possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, superior knowledge of dentistry and dental terminology, a friendly, outgoing demeanor, positive can-do attitude and excellent organizational skills. As a Specialty Dental Assistant you must represent Smile Workshops core values and live by the Smile Workshop Creed.
Essential Functions:
Provide outstanding guest service for the patient; make the patient the #1 priority; excellent chairside manner.
Assist the doctors with all dental procedures including but not limited to
o Take directions from doctor
o Anticipate doctors needs
o Performing patient oral evaluations
o Various laboratory duties for example; fabricate retainers, impressions for study models, poor and trim models.
Basic orthodontic duties including but not limited to:
o Bracket setup
o Ligature removal and replacement
o Wire removal and placement
Work closely with Pediatric Dentist to provide excellent patient care while under oral sedation.
Must have the following certifications:
o Nitrous
o X-ray
o CPR/ BLS
Greet and prepare patients for treatment.
Ensure that all supplies are available and ordered via the preferred vendors.
Follows all Compliance Protocols and Updates Offices when New Protocols take effect.
Lead by example; exercise good team work; have mutual respect for team; partner with team to create an exceptional experience for patient.
Perform efficient and accurate procedures to help maintain doctors schedule and patient flow; create no patient wait time; maintain time flexibility for patient; be present, engaged, ready to work at all assigned shift times.
Review patient chart prior to doctor arrival and log appropriate patient data during exam and treatment as well as transcribe doctor notes in patient chart
Have knowledge and understanding of dental terminology sufficient to perform job successfully
Verify patient health history (basic health review, medications, understanding impact with dentistry) and document
appropriately in patients chart
Accountability for successful performance of all job functions
Assist the dentist as necessary to gain the patients commitment for the best possible treatment with urgency
Perform functions in accordance with the applicable states Dental Auxiliaries Table of Permitted Duties
Attending to the patients individual concerns and expectations
At the direction of the dentist, complete x-rays and intra-oral/ extra-oral pictures, prepare tray setups, instruct patients on postoperative care, and record patient charting
Evaluate and complete any maintenance to all equipment (i.e. autoclave, hand pieces, etc.)
Ensure that the doctor always stay on schedule, the back office area is clean and organized.
Non-Essential Functions:
Clean and prepare operatory per organization procedures prior to patient appointment
Sterilize equipment and operatories per guidelines
Follow all OSHA and BBP (Blood borne Pathogen) federal guidelines
Assist team in scheduling patients follow up visits
Follow up with labs to ensure quality and timely products
Inform the front office if the doctor is running behind

Education/Certification:
o Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
o Current radiography certification required
o Dental Assistant certification as required by state; ability to become certified
o Experience in a professional environment with direct patient contact preferred
o Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation/ basic life support
o Current certification to monitor Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen analgesia
o Maintain annual OSHA, HIPAA and, Infection Control training as required by law
