Bookbright Media has immediate need for freelance typesetting preparation editors (prep editors) for a wide range of social science books and digital materials in topic such as criminal justice, education, business, sociology, current events, law, economics, area studies, social work, and political science.

Were looking for fast and conscientious readers with book experience to perform prescribed editorial tasks on original manuscripts written by leading academics and authors. Excellent opportunity for those starting out in the publishing field!

Were seeking freelancers who are passionate about learning, literature, publishing, or any other relentless, shameless pursuit of knowledge.

WHAT THE JOB IS FOR

To verify that manuscripts are complete, internally consistent, and prepared for typesetting. IMPORTANT: prep editors are not asked to do a content edit or other rewriting tasks associated with a traditional copy edit. Manuscripts are presumed to have already received a copy edit for larger issues of text readability, argumentation, etc. Prep editors are asked only to ensure editorial consistency and readiness for typesetting.

WHAT YOULL DO

Verify that all manuscript parts are present and in order, including any artwork

Read manuscript for obvious spelling and grammatical faults

Verify references, bibliographies, and citations are complete and correctly formatted

Produce style sheet to verify consistency of authors editorial choices

Produce list of running heads

Generate queries for authors to resolve manuscript problems

Tag manuscript with typesetting codes or apply Word styles

Produce notes for typesetters

QUALITIES OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

You have 1“2 years of editorial experience, including experience with print books.

You can make your way around Excel and Word, including use of productivity tools such as wildcard searches, text styling, and track changes.

You are widely read in a variety of subject areas and have a voracious thirst for knowledge about unfamiliar topics.

You are familiar with at least 1 major style guide such as Chicago, APA, MLA, or Oxford

You have good writing skills.

Some familiarity with InDesign is a big plus.

You take deadlines very seriously.

This is a freelance offer. A skills test will be administered before any assignment can be offered.

Compensation: $1.00“$1.25 per page depending on project length
