At the GS-05 and GS-06 level. The incumbent performs
developmental assignments under closer than normal supervision.
Assignments become progressively more difficult until the
full-performance level is reached.
As a member of a survey team, operate instruments and apply
surveying techniques involved with the real time acquisition of
engineering, scientific, environmental, topographic, geodetic,
oceanographic and hydrographic data.
The surveys collected will be used for planning, design,
construction, computing quantities and capacities for dredging
and civil work and military projects.
The Surveying Technician monitors the operation of the complex
component parts, ensure that data is properly recorded, and
oversee the safe operation and proper use of and field equipment
Member on a hydrographic survey team responsible for determining
channel depths, surveying disposal sites for dredging, surveying
burrow sites, pre-dredge and post-dredge surveys, waterway
bottom relief, identifying and locating obstructions.
Operates survey systems, side scan sonar system, and depth
recorder, that measure and records depths and configuration of
the bottom.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness
determination, as determined by a completed background
investigation.
Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license.
Must undergo a pre-employment physical examination and be
enrolled in the medical surveillance program that requires
periodic physical examinations.
Must obtain and maintain a USACE license for the operation of
motorboat less than 26 feet.
Incumbent is requires to travel to perform duties. Travel could
be as much as 200 days of a year.
The work requires routine lifting of equipment of up to 50
pounds; may be subjected to stressful, hazardous and physically
demanding conditions while surveying.

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's
degree (a) with a major study in [insert applicable field(s) of
study in engineering, construction, or industrial technology];
or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination
of courses such as drafting, surveying, mathematics, physical
science, industrial technology, industrial arts, or technical
subjects pertinent to construction; or engineering technician work
such as electricity, material testing, or engineering mechanics
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education
and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as
the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To
compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months
of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education
beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two
percentages.GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized
experience which includes: 1) Assist in completing topographic
surveys; 2) Assist in utilizing and operating survey grade Global
Positioning Systems (GPS). This definition of specialized experience
is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position
in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level
education in a field directly related to the work of the position,
such as [insert applicable field(s) of study].
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education
and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as
the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To
compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months
of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed
graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two
percentages.Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General
Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks
of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent GS-6.
GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Experience in using, adapting and adjusting equipment for survey operations, inspecting and testing equipment and materials for acquisition of engineering, scientific, environmental, topographic geodetic, oceanographic and hydrographic data.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field
