The IT/Tech Field Technician, under general direction, performs advanced troubleshooting, analysis, and problem-solving for unit-level support in multiple technical fields. This position routinely works in the field collaborating with departments and external vendors to evaluate, install, configure and maintain software and hardware related to parking, access, revenue control and video surveillance systems software and equipment. This position requires a lot of hands on field work done outside of an office environment. There will be times where the employee will be required to work outside in heat/cold elements. You will be provided with a state vehicle to travel across campus. This position is considered essential when the University declares an emergency which requires work some nights, holidays, and weekends in addition to a week of on call duty rotation.We need an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Three years of experience in the use, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of network-based electronic systems equipment, personal computer workstations/servers and computer networking

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of computer networks (design, installing, configuring, maintaining) and troubleshooting tools (ping, traceroute, etc.)serial communications (RS232, and RS 422)
Working knowledge of personal computer workstations and servers (specifying, installing, configuring, maintaining)
Ability to identify faulty electronic components/modules through instrument measurements or process of elimination
Fluent in the use of common office productivity tools (Microsoft Office suite of products)
Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Required Licenses and Certifications:
Valid drivers license
Must be able to obtain State of Texas class C vehicle operators license within 30 days of employment

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in the English language both verbally and in writing

May be required to work some nights, holidays and weekends
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in computer science, electronics, telecommunications or a related field
Advanced corporate or military programs related to computer networkingÂ
Five years of experience in the use, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of parking control, access control, revenue control, and/or surveillance systems equipment, personal computer workstations/servers and computer networking
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to express and explain technical concepts and issues such that a person with no knowledge of the subject may grasp the idea/problem/solution
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
Industry-recognized certification in network hardware and/or operating systems (e.g. Cisco, Microsoft, etc.)
Salary Range: $42,511.45 - $49,712.00

Responsibilities:
Assists with planning, organizing and controlling the activities related to database systems in multi-platform environments
Evaluates software products and programming tools to determine their applicability to a specific database system and/or project
Resolves performance problems and recovers from system outages
Provides technical oversight of computing systems testing and applications
Troubleshoots routine network problems
Provides support for infrastructure connection in emergencies or changing environments
Answers questions and provides technical assistance and/or training to application users
Produces reports and summaries for management and/or users including status reports, problem reports, progress summaries, and system utilization reports
Works as a team member with other IT staff and cross trains in other systems within the unit
May direct the efforts of one or more individuals
Provides technical oversight and training for conducting research of problems and the formulation of recommended solutions for customers
Serves as a resource for internal and external customers
Resolves hardware and software problems with vendor technical support
Repairs hardware problems
Installs, configures and maintains both critical and non-critical software and hardware
Prepares specifications for purchases of hardware and software upgrades
Assists with production control, disaster recovery, networking, computer operations, or other operating systems
Develops and maintains documentation on existing systems
Maintains 100% on time compliance with all university required training for all employees
Approves time worked and requests appropriate leave in a timely manner
Reads and responds to e-mail
Reviews/reads information listed on the department intranet
Performs assigned tasks in a safe manner and utilizes personal protective items/equipment as appropriate or instructed by supervisor or department
Reports unsafe actions or conditions to supervisor immediately and supports and follows unit/department safety guidelines practices and policies
Persons in this position will be required to drive state vehicle to travel to various parts of campus and are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc.
