Job SummaryLead original graphic designs for web user interfaces. Present design concepts to creative director and Sr. Director of Web Services. Participate in web design planning. Lead design and development of HTML emails intended for distribution to large email lists. Build finished websites and web pages from content provided by editors, communication managers, specialists or departmental stakeholders. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Specific knowledge, skills, abilities, and special licenses need to effectively perform the position (software, professional certifications, driver’s license, languages, etc.):
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with WordPress
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • WCAG 2.0 Web accessibility guidelines

Minimum Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in related field. Two years full-time Web design and development experience.

Preferred Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in graphics design, visual arts, arts and technology, communication design or related field. Preferred Experience & Skills: The desired years of experience that would be necessary to effectively perform in the position, and any additional skills:
  • Four years full-time Web design and development experience in a large organization.
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Bootstrap
  • SASS
  • WordPress content management theme development
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems
  • Adobe Dreamweaver or similar code editing tools
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Web design. Lead original graphic designs for Web user interfaces. Present desktop concepts to associate and assistant vice presidents of Marketing and Web Services for review; incorporate revisions. Participate in Web design planning. Write code to render designs into working Web pages. Test code on Web browsers and operating system platforms (both traditional/PC and mobile) that deliver over a 1% share of website visitor traffic. Regress bugs found in testing. Build templates into WordPress content management system. Train Web Developers and Web Specialists in best practices for photography selection, cropping, and optimization. Review new website designs for brand standard adherence and quality of user interface.
  • Mass email. Lead design and development of HTML emails intended for distribution to large email lists. Freshen mass email templates twice per year by conceiving new designs and presenting to leadership in Web Services and Marketing for review. Review work of Web Developers and Web Specialists; show them how to improve visual design and assure improvements are completed. Coordinate weekly update and distribution of mass email schedule. Work collaboratively with Web content editors, communication managers and other message stakeholders to ensure mass email messages meet best practices and brand standards.
  • Build finished websites and Web pages from content provided by editors, communication managers, specialists or departmental stakeholders using text editor; Adobe Creative Suite and/or WordPress CMS software. Create, copy and delete files on Web server using Dreamweaver, Transmit, AnyClient or similar software. Ensure completion of pre-launch checklist items and appropriate level of quality assurance. Ensure university brand standards, WCAG 2.0, and other applicable policies are followed. Work collaboratively with Web software developers to host sites on CMS, build in Google CSE search and/or integrate Web applications.
  • Back up to News Center production. Assemble finished pages under the supervision of Creative Director, and in collaboration with Project Management, Web Content Editors and Web Developers. Incorporate text, photography, HTML and CSS code into finished Web pages. May incorporate slideshows, video or other special elements. Proof pages for proper display and link functioning across popular Web browsers, and on both traditional/PC and mobile device platforms.
  • Attend University Web Services team meeting. Attend project meetings as needed. Attend other meetings as needed.
