Management (HIM) Supervisor) of Health Information Management at the
VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System. MRA's in VHA
perform or supervise work concerned with the management of a medical
record program or the provision of services related to medical
record administration/health information services.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesDuties include but are not limited to the following.
Keeps the Chief, Health Information Management (CHIM),
management and clinical staff abreast of changing technology in
electronic systems uses to collect, process, code, protect and
store health information.
Provides effective audits and monitors for all areas of
responsibility, assuring that accurate and timely data is
processed by all employees.
Develops performance standards and conducts performance
evaluations.
Develops and conducts competency assessments.
Formulates and initiates performance standards.
Approves leave and establishes work schedules.
Provides administrative support to other HIM Supervisors/Leads
by aiding in the selection, training, and evaluation of section
employees.
Responsible for determining the need for and extent of training
personnel outside HIM with regard to medical records and its
format.
Assists the CHIM with the development, evaluation and updating
of office procedures, manuals, policies and directives.
Performs audits and analyses, preparing and presenting findings
and recommendations t the CHIM, Service Line Leaders and
designees.
Analyzes workflow to determine potential problem areas and makes
recommendations to correct these areas and improve coordination
between the various units.
Participates in various facility, VISN and national committees
requiring health information management subject matter
expertise.

classification systems such as International Classification of

2. Ability to determine and evaluate compliance with the standards
of regulatory and accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission on
the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services, etc.;
3. Ability to provide technical advice and/or provide oversight on
health information issues. This includes skill in interpreting and
adapting health information management guidelines that are not
completely applicable to the work or have gaps in specificity;
4. Ability to extract information, generate reports from various
databases (e.g. clinical, financial), and analyze data including a
consideration of such issues as applicability, validity,
reliability, and the quality and characteristics of the data source,
etc.;
5. If the position is supervisory in nature, ability to successfully
apply principles and techniques of sound human resource
management;
6. If the position is supervisory in nature, skill in administrative
management, i.e., budgeting, contracting, procurement, property
management, and
7. If the position is supervisory in nature, ability to delegate
