The Alkek Velodrome is a 333meter, concrete cycling track. Its banking ranges from 33 degrees in the turns to 9 degrees in the straights. It was built in 1986 and has held everything from Junior State Championships to Olympic Qualifiers. Location is Cullen Park, West Houston.

For 30 years, the Alkek Velodrome was owned and operated by the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Since 2007 the Greater Houston Cycling Foundation (GHCF) has been responsible for all operations and maintenance of the Alkek Velodrome. The GHCF is a non-profit 501c(3) corporation created to promote cycling within the greater Houston community. The foundation manages the velodrome and oversees all programs, including the Youth Cycling League, adult cycling programs, seasonal weekly and as-scheduled racing events, coaching of junior and adult racers and various other activities to promote cycling throughout the Houston community.

The GHCF is seeking a contractual service provider to coordinate the 2020 track cycling program and marketing activities for the season, beginning in early March. This is a one year contract.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Super-high energy individual that executes against the GHCF vision for delivery of facility operations and track program

Creates and maintains the track training and racing schedule based on expectations of Race Directors

Coordinates and manages all volunteer and officiating staff for open training sessions and races

Manages master racer database and results, maintaining season points and upgrade points, ensuring consistent entry and management of data by volunteer race directors

Ensures sufficient funds are available for race payouts, engaging with CFO to manage cash position

Engages dynamically on all social and traditional media channels to drive publicity, rider engagement, local business sponsorship and tell Alkek’s story

Community outreach to local race teams and business– driving race participation, supporting festivals and special events, attracting and maintaining a pipeline of sponsors appropriate for the cycling community

Facilitates training classes through entire season including summer class for juniors – working with the race committee, plans, schedules and promotes classes, secures coaches, coordinates registration and follows up post class to encourage attendees to stay engaged with the track.

Facility maintenance and improvements: as directed by GHCF maintenance committee, schedule and coordinate to minimize disruption to operations and facilitate incremental improvement to the racing offer at Alkek.

USA Cycling interface – ensuring that the facility is considered as a core center for cycling development, and plays a key role in all development and racing opportunities,

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Required Education and Experience:

Ideal candidate will have 3 – 5 years of experience in sports/events management industry;

Track record of building customer and community engagement through social media;

Existing proven network in Houston, effective networking skills;

Creates excellent professional documents for marketing, informational purposes;

Demonstrated experience of being the “go-to” person - takes accountability, delivers results; and

2 years + experience in local community engagement including engaging local businesses.

Project Management skills (schedule, cost, communications), multi-tasking;

Experience working with a base of volunteers in a non-profit setting;

Event planning and management;

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to present options and decisions for review; and

Facility management experience – managing contractors and meeting timelines.

Contract rate is negotiable.
