SUMMARYResponsible for the allocation and assignment of nursing staff during
the shift to provide for safe patient care. Serves as an administrative
supervisor and resource during the shift for staff, physicians,
patients, families and visitors. Provides administrative continuity to
staff, patients, and families for information shared, actions taken and
outcome reported. Serves as a patient advocate.Serves as an administrative resource during the shift for directing,
supervising, coordinating and evaluating activities within the hospital
departments and the care provided within clinical areas. Serves in a
consultative capacity to assure that care meets legal, ethical,
institutional and professional standards. Adheres to the philosophy,
policies and procedures of the department and organizationQUALIFICATIONSEducation:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current Texas
licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
Prefer Bachelor of Science in nursing.
Current AHA BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certifications.
TNCC and STABLE are desired.
Experience:
A minimum of three years of clinical experience in the acute care of
medical and surgical patients, with additional experience in ER, ICU
preferred.
A minimum of two years of experience in a Charge Nurse or management
position in an acute healthcare facility.

This position requires excellent verbal and writing communication
skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONSWork requires extensive walking within hospital, possibly standing for
long periods of time as well as possibly long sedentary periods are
possible. Climbing, pushing and pulling may also be required in
critical and disaster situations. Lifting of boxes/supplies as well as
possible patients. Frequently reaches for and handles papers and
writing implements. Near-visual acuity and color discrimination in
reviewing data. Works inside in clean, well-lighted, heated and air
conditioned area the majority of the time. Exposure to unpleasant
sights, smells and infectious diseases are possible (including
blood/body fluids). Work schedule is usually 12 hour shifts and may
need to work overtime as need arises and Holiday and Weekends dependent

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES FUNCTIONS:
Staff shift and plan staffing for next shift according to nursing
care and standards, justify in writing to the Chief Nursing Officer
deviation from these calculations.
Assist with patient care in all areas, as required. Assume
responsibility for ER when ER personnel are absent.
Serve as administrative resource person to staff.
Serve as a liaison between Administrator-On-Call and external
agencies; consulting with Nurse Manager/Director or other
Administrative representative concerning matters that require
immediate attention beyond their scope of authority.
Communicate pertinent information to on-coming house
supervisor/nurse manager and Chief Nursing Officer/AOC as
appropriate.
Read and document in Supervisor's Communication Book to assure
passage of accurate and current information to all supervisors.
Document details of potential disciplinary/behavior problems and
send information to appropriate clinical nursing director/manager
and/or Chief Nursing Officer.
Assist nurse managers/directors and Chief Nursing Officer with
employee evaluations through input and anecdotal note documentation
of both positive and negative observations.
Act as nursing staff representative to physicians.
Respond to all emergencies and resuscitation. Assume team leader
responsibility during resuscitation unless ER, ICU, or OB charge
nurse is already performing in that role.
Evaluate quality of nursing care in all areas, making patient rounds
as able.
Oversee admissions, transfers and discharges during shift. Will act
as the hospital incoming transfer center.
Supervise staff in maintaining adequate drug records; initiate
action to correct errors in the narcotic count.
Assume responsibility for staff performance during the shift,
participate in in-service planning and presentation during the shift
as appropriate.
Initiate incident reports when indicated with follow-up with the
Director of Staff Development, nurse manager/director, and Chief
Nursing Officer as appropriate.
Serve as nursing resource person to staff. Be available and willing
to teach as need arises. Maintain current knowledge of HMH Policies
and Procedures.
Support administrative and nurse manager/director decisions and
policies. Adhere to HMH Policies and Procedures. Follow proper chain
of command.
Assigns hospital beds based upon bed availability balancing with
direct admits, hospital procedures and Emergency Room admissions.
Follows up in the Emergency Room on admitted patients to ensure that
they are moved swiftly onto the floors.
Consistently monitors Bed Watch in conjunction with EVS to
efficiently place patients in beds.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
Adjust daily schedule for illness, emergency or census influx. May
participate in staff coverage if competent and off duty and all
other options for coverage have failed.
Document all sick calls, tardiness, absenteeism, and problems with
dress code. Keep "on call" list and "call in extra" list accurate
and up to date.
Administer safety policies and procedures as necessary.
Assure quality of patient care and safety through rounding.
Call in ancillary personnel and departments as necessary.
Assure infection control policies are observed.
Oversee crash cart checks and documentation.
Stock crash carts daily as appropriate.
Assume responsibility for supply management; carry stock room keys.
Participate in nurse management activities and in-services as
required by nursing and hospital administration.
Incident command leader until appropriate Senior Leader is available
to take over command.
Adhere to legal guidelines and hospital policy regarding release of
information and evidence to law enforcement, media or the public.
Participate in activities to promote HMH in community health and
education.
Be willing and have the ability to support staff in all areas as
need arises.
Participate in in-service programs as both student and teacher.
Attend workshops, as possible, and take responsibility for keeping
own knowledge and skills up to date. Attend mandatory in-services.
Will respond to patient/family complaints, physician complaints and
employee conflicts and provide resolution.
