The Senior Disaster Recovery Specialist is responsible for eliciting requirements, and collaboratively designing, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on the enterprise IT disaster recovery management (DRM) program for Academy. The objective of this role is to support the DRM program in building resilience into and supporting timely IT operations recovery following the occurrence of an IT outage or major disasters, such as but not limited to cyberattacks, fires, earthquakes, floods, biochemical attacks, and pandemics that result in the partial or complete disruption of business or IT operations.

The specialist's role is primarily technical, but strong leadership and communication skills are needed to effectively collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, other recovery team members, and other technical leaders within IT in the definition, prioritization, and support of key IT DR requirements. In addition, an understanding of Academy Sports + Outdoors' operations and culture is equally important to technical expertise. The successful candidate will be able to translate business operations recovery requirements into actionable plans, IT systems infrastructure requirements, and resilience/recovery testing strategies. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strategic thinking and will effectively link the enterprise's IT DR activities with business operations recovery and continuity requirements on a proactive basis translating business recovery plans into actionable testing.

Job Description:

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Business Administration or equivalent work experience
Work Experiences:
  • Experience in supporting IT disaster recovery as well as disaster recovery plan testing
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of current IT DR planning techniques and technologies, as well as the methods used in performing risk analysis and business impact analysis
  • Experience with the testing of emergency responses, IT recovery support, and business resumption procedures
  • Proven ability to work under stressful conditions, such as business-related crises
Skills:
  • Applicable knowledge and practical application of IT Disaster Recovery, knowledge of data and voice telecommunications to assist in the preparation of related recovery procedures
  • Technical breadth and depth in IT systems overall and at least one specific IT technology (storage, servers, networking, etc.)
  • Project planning and organizational skills
  • Professional written and verbal communications
  • Display interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to manage multiple projects/priorities at one time
Responsibilities:
  • This position will define, update, and own the overall DR strategy, as they will manage the deployment and continuous availability of DR for all Academy systems/tools residing within the primary and backup datacenter (disaster recovery site) and Disaster Recovery related contingency planning
  • This role is a member of the team that is responsible for addressing the IT operations recovery and resiliency needs of the entire company. For this reason, the IT DR specialist must be prepared to work with individuals in many different disciplines, across both IT and business units. Due to the nature of IT disaster recovery, the IT DR specialist must be prepared to be on call at any time, as they will help lead the recovery of business functions in a disaster scenario as per the established DR plans
  • Assess change efforts that may impact the ability to maintain resiliency; identify likely contingency scenarios that may jeopardize system availability; develop and maintain response plans
  • Own the planning and execution of bi-annual DR testing, including actual failover events, emergency response simulations, tabletop exercises, and documentation reviews; measure capability against defined program KPIs, processes, procedures, and policies to manage IT Service Continuity ability to meet defined business requirements.
  • Compile and follow up on post IT infrastructure disaster recovery testing by external providers to ensure actions needed to improve recovery response in the IT organization are implemented
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on disaster recovery technology
  • Monitor and report on ability to meet performance targets and service levels; monitor and report investigation results of breaches of availability targets and service non-availability, and track and report on required remedial action
  • Stay current on DR trends and provide recommendations for continuous improvement around Academy Sports + Outdoors' DR strategy.
  • Responsible for maintaining up-to-date DR-related system documentation in a continuously changing environment.
