Basic Education Requirement:: You must possess a degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement above, applicants must meet the following Minimum Qualification requirement in order to be considered for this position: For the GS-05 level: I meet basic education requirements described above. For the GS-07 level: you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through federal service. For this position, examples of specialized experience include entry-level or trainee level experience such as: 1) Utilize Basic professional concepts, principles, and methodology of biological sufficient to participate in ecology and soil-vegetation (i.e., rangeland, forestland, cropland, etc.) relationships; 2) ability to use computerized databases and inventory tools, in order to manipulate and enter Ecological Site Description information; OR1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement. Superior Academic Achievement in a bachelor's degree curriculum directly related to the work of the position. To qualify for superior academic achievement, you must have ONE of the following: (1) standing in the upper third of your college class or major subdivision at the time you apply; (2) grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed, either (a) at the time of application or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; (3) B+ (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in a related discipline, either (a) at the time of application or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR (4) election to membership in one of the national honorary scholastic societies that meets the requirements of the Association of College Honor Society; OR Education Substitute: 1 or more years of graduate level education in a directly related discipline; OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100% as outlined in OPM Qualifications policy. To qualify for the GS-9 grade level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level or higher, or comparable experience not gained through federal service. For this position, examples of specialized experience include advanced-trainee level experience such as: 1) assists in environmental investigations, application of inventory and classification in unique and/or diverse ecosystems; 2) describe and classify soil and vegetation dynamics in plant communities; 3) develop, write, and/or analyze environmental impact statements, categorical exclusions, and other documents, in order to make assessments into formats suitable for Ecological Site Descriptions; OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. This eligibility period cannot extend more than 6 years from the date on which the requirements for the academic course of study were met. Recent Graduate appointments may not exceed two years. Recent Graduates who satisfactorily complete all the USDA Recent Graduates Program requirements may be non-competitively converted to a Term or Permanent appointment in the competitive service. Conversion is not guaranteed. Recent Graduates converted to Term appointments may later be non-competitively converted to a Permanent competitive service position. Physical Demands: Work requires long periods of standing; walking or riding horses/ATVs/motorcycles over rough terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, similar activities. Regular and recurring physical exertion related to conservation work requires walking on rough terrain, jumping ditches and furrows, or climbing steep banks. Conversion/Promotion to the next higher grade may occur without further competition once all legal and regulatory requirements are met to include management's certification of the continuing need for performance of duties at the higher grade level. Conversion/Promotion is not guaranteed. This position is eligible for telework within the commuting area of the duty location of the position and other flexible work arrangements.
