Retama Equine Hospital is a 100% equine veterinary facility providing series in Medicine, Surgery, Reproduction and Emergency.

Our goal is to improve the health and welfare of the horse and to provide the highest quality of veterinary medicine, while providing exceptional customer service to our clients.

Staffing Number : Approximately 20 employees including veterinarians, interns, veterinary technicians, office manager, receptionist / clerical staff and barn crew

Veterinarians in Practice : Michael F. Martin DVM, Keith Huffman DVM, Sarah Grose DVM, Natasha Frost DVM and Shauna Lawless MVB, MS, DACVS-LA.

Practice Facilities : 15 stalls in main hospital, 16 outside paddocks, 6 stall barn, 4 isolation stalls, 3 ICU stalls, 2 treatment rooms, radiology room, surgical suite and 2 padded recovery stalls.

Case Load : Approximately 4000 in-hospital and ambulatory cases per year.

Types of Cases : 25% medical, 25% surgery (soft tissue and some orthopedic), 25% lameness, 15% neonatal, 10% reproduction.

Estimated Daily or Weekly Work Load : Varies with time of year and emergency case load. Normal business hours are 8am-5pm Monday through Friday and 8am-12pm by appointment of Saturday.

Emergency services are provided 24 hours a day.

Philosophy of Internship : To provide a new veterinarian the opportunity to practice quality equine medicine and surgery in a learning environment that is conducive to increasing their knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine, along with exposure to the day to day factors of managing a private practice, thus providing them with the tools to become a successful equine veterinarian.

Prerequisites for Internship : DVM degree, completion of National Boards Exam (NAVLE), a Texas DVM license or eligibility for licensure in the state of Texas, at least three professional and personal references and a personal interview.

List of Internship Duties in Practice : Duties will involve performing or assisting in :

Treatment of hospitalized cases

Examination of patients admitted

Veterinary procedures (surgery, anesthesia, diagnostics)

Emergency duty

Some ambulatory calls

Emergency Duty Requirements : Rotating schedule with other intern veterinarians, always with direct or indirect supervision of a staff veterinarian.

Amount of Supervision : Supervision depends on the intern’s progress in development of knowledge and skills.

Employee Benefits : 7 days leave, 3 days leave for CE, Professional Liability Insurance and AAEP dues.

Internship Duration : One year. Internship Salary : $2500 per month in addition to above benefits.
