General Accounting Manager (14091)

Manage the General Accounting staff, workflows, researching and resolving issues as needed. Staffing/scheduling, timecards, interviewing/hiring, training and motivating. SOX/COSO narrative and assessment review for General Accounting. Serve as backup for end-user authorization contact for Federal Reserve FedLine services. Assist with annual 1099 and Canadian T4a preparation and filing. Assist with IRS CP-2100 and B-Notice creation. IRS 972-CG penalty abatement. Assist with Unclaimed Property processes of due diligence filings and annual remittances for US, Canada and New Zealand.

Oversee the clerical staff of the General Accounting department that perform bank reconciliations, general ledger account reconciliation, new business premium processing and Accounts Payable. This includes ACH balancing and FedLine transmittals, Foreign Billing and Payment bank transmittals, Checks-Issuance balancing, check writer, Check Distribution, New Business and Daily Deposits, Return Item balancing, Intercompany Wire Balancing, Agent weekly Advances/Bonuses, Agent Commissions, Travel Balancing, Intercompany General Ledger Balancing, Lockbox Payments, AD&D Experience Refund, Direct Mail Billing and Refunds, Monthly Bank Analysis, Daily Balancing of Loans and Deposit Accounts (DAF).

  • Manage general accounting operations
  • Fraudulent and forgery affidavits
  • Manage Petty Cash
  • Research/correct ACH and invalid account errors
  • Review entries > $10,000 daily
  • Review Intercompany Balances-daily
  • TIN Matching-Agents and Vendors
  • ESOP Stock Purchase Program
  • Bank reconciliations, review approve month-end
  • Daily and monthly Suspense Account reviews
  • Handle Audit Requests for department functions
  • Maintain SOX/COSO internal control narratives and assess controls
  • Research and Correct accounting errors with other departments
  • Work closely with IT on cycle problems that involve accounting
  • Research and correct Lawson Lift Errors
  • 1099 and T4 Processing-yearly
  • Assist with Year-end Annual Statement preparation

Required Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must possess an understanding of business writing and verbal communication for interactions with staff and upper management
  • Ability to manage multiple complex issues simultaneously, meeting predetermined time deadlines and deliverables
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry
  • Knowledge of Insurance Accounting
  • LifeComm accounting system experience a plus
  • Lawson accounting system experience a plus
  • Mastery of Excel including pivot tables and Vlookups
  • Access experience a plus

Required Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting
  • 5+ years of accounting experience
  • 2+ years of experience leading/managing people
