MD Anderson Cancer Center has a Massage Therapist opportunity in the West Houston. The ideal candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience as a licensed massage therapist in a corporate or community setting.A minimum of 6 months massage therapy practice in an inpatient hospital, bilingual English/Spanish and experience with oncology patients is preferred.Shift: Part Time / Monday and Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 p m and Wednesday 12:00 pm – 5:00pmSUMMARYThe primary purpose of the Massage Therapist position is to provide evidence-based inpatient and outpatient oncology massage services to MD Anderson patients and caregivers. Ensures medically safe practices and compliance with all center and institutional policies.Key FunctionsClinical CareEnsures a safe environment, maintains equipment and supplies in a clean, operable and safe manner, and follows center and institutional safety guidelines. Reports status of supplies/inventory to designated center personnel. Wears appropriate attire or lab coat during practice. Accurately verifies the MD/APP order. Reviews chart for contraindications/precautions for treatment and, if present, reports to physician/nurse before procedure. Administers and evaluates patient questionnaires. Reviews and assesses medical history. Explains procedure to patient and obtains consent when needed. Assists patients in positioning or getting on/off table if needed. Performs physical exam and reviews symptoms pertinent to procedure. Keeps patient comfortable and maintains proper draping at all times. Observes/assesses patient for any unexpected and/or undesirable physical/emotional reactions, suspends treatment, provides appropriate intervention, reports to physician/nurse, and documents adverse events as indicated. Develops a plan of care including treatment goals for each visit. Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies. Maintains infection control policies at all times. Documents and bills in an accurate and timely manner. Attends and contributes to interdisciplinary team meetings as schedule allows and actively participate in discussion including presentation of patient cases. Participates in program evaluation processes and committee meetings as requested. Other duties as assigned.EducationEducates patients, caregivers, and staff members on oncology massage. May create continuing education opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge of registered therapists in the area of oncology massage. Provides in-service education and orientation to healthcare professionals in the application oncology massage as needed. May participate in outreach programs, conferences, retreats and other activities as part of program offerings.Research-related activitiesFamiliar with recent research regarding massage, especially in cancer care. May participate in clinical research including the design and implementation of studies, patient enrollment in clinical trials, data analysis, and writing of manuscripts. Administers questionnaires per center guidelines.EDUCATIONRequired: High school diploma or equivalentPreferred: Continuing education/course completion for massage in an oncology settingEXPERIENCERequired: One year experience as a licensed massage therapist in a corporate or community setting.Preferred: Minimum of 6 months massage therapy practice in an inpatient hospital, bilingual English/Spanish and experience with oncology patients. Possess a basic understanding of health care clinical operations and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a multidisciplinary team.LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONRequired: Licensure as a Massage Therapist from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certificationPreferred: Certification with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).
