Your Opportunity

Charles Schwab Asset Management Solutions (SAMS) Technology is part of the Schwab Technology Services (STS) organization which is responsible for the company's use of information technology including all telecommunications, operations and client and business applications.

SAMS Technology is aligned to support the technology needs of Charles Schwab Investment Management Inc. (CSIM). CSIM is a part of the broader Schwab Asset Management Solutions organization. Schwab Asset Management Solutions was formed in 2019 to unite asset management-related services and platforms across the Schwab organization. In addition to CSIM, SAMS is comprised of Charles Schwab Investment Advisory, Inc. (CSIA), Asset Management Client Solutions, Schwab Private Client (SPC) and the Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR). The integration of five distinct, yet complementary asset and wealth management-related groups within a single business organization allows us to drive a cohesive strategy to deliver on investors' needs more effectively.

CSIM was founded in 1989 as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Charles Schwab Corporation (CSC), a publicly traded company (NYSE: SCHW). Since the launch of our first money funds in 1990, we have grown to managing a product lineup of over 100 mutual funds, ETFs, CITs, and separately managed account strategies, and serve clients across the retail, intermediary, and institutional markets. Today, CSIM is the 3rd largest provider of index mutual funds, the 5th largest provider of ETFs, and the 8th largest money market fund complex, with more than $520 billion in discretionary and non-discretionary assets under management. As one of the industry's largest and most experienced asset managers, we put client needs first and are committed to lowering costs and reducing unnecessary complexity on behalf of all investors and the financial professionals who serve them. The remaining SAMS businesses including CSIM total $2.9 Tn of assets being managed on the technology platforms.

This Managing Director position within SAMS Technology reports directly to the Vice President and Divisional CIO and will provide senior leadership to the Application and Data Architecture technology functions supporting the SAMS business, in addition to providing the development of shared services supporting the SAMS Technology application Development Organizations. The role encompasses the architecture for the platforms supporting the Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds, the quantitative research platforms used in both portfolio management and investment research, in addition to defining the data strategy to support the Separately Managed Accounts business and the Schwab Private Client business. The role will include the architectural oversight, leadership, and governance of the SAMS Technology ecosystem, liaison with the Enterprise Architecture and Application Architecture organizations and responsibility for defining the next generation multi cloud based architectural roadmap for SAMS Technology. The individual will manage the relationships with the Senior Vice Presidents in the SAMS Business overseeing Operations, Investment Risk, Performance Management, Portfolio Management, Investment and Wealth Management, Trading, Sales and distribution, Product and Strategy as well as Compliance. In addition, the individual will be responsible for a hybrid vendor cloud-based architecture and the integration of proprietary platforms into a public and private cloud environment. The role will require relationship management and close collaboration with the strategic vendors and technology senior leaders across SAMS Technology.

What you are good at

This is a senior technology leadership role based in one of the SAMS Technology locations, given the scope of the role and the expertise required from both an architecture and people leader perspective the location can be flexible. The role includes managing the software development lifecycle including the coordination, prioritization, and communication across the business and SAMS product areas for all the shared services being developed. It will include setting the standards, operating model, and governance oversight, designing, building, and realizing the strategy for the teams to support the dynamic data and architectural needs of the SAMS business.

The role includes the hands-on management of both full-time employees and contractors including the vendor relationships with partner firms. The role encompasses establishing and directing the strategic and tactical goals (OKR's) for the teams, building a client driven technology organization improving the software, data and architectural quality, cloud platforms and technology service provided. This is a multi-year initiative enabling the SAMS business to scale and leverage its data across the business functions to aid in decision making, operating the business with the required regulatory oversight and ownership and being able to manage growth effectively and operate efficiently. As SAMS Technology continues to build the key capabilities in its foundational platforms to enable the business to launch new products and meet strategic objectives the architectural coordination both within the SAMS Technology organization and across STS will be paramount to enable a well thought out architectural ecosystem which both provides the scale, reduces operational risk and minimizes operating cost in the future.

In addition to the functional responsibilities within the technology organization, the role will include managing the architectural organization to set the strategic roadmap for the continued migration of the SAMS technology platforms to the public cloud. This will include building the proprietary shared services across the platforms to enable seamless integration between vendor platforms and SAMS proprietary developed platforms enabling reusability and a competitive advantage to the SAMS Business.
