Photo Guide / Instructor Position
Get paid to travel and photograph the most beautiful places around the globe while providing outstanding customer service and teaching landscape & wildlife photography. Backcountry Journeys offers a variety of Photography Tours, Workshops & Safaris in locations such as Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Alaska, Glacier National Park, Yosemite, Hawaii, Utah the Great Smoky Mountains as well as internationally to destinations including Iceland, Africa, India, Costa Rica & Brazil. We are looking for people who are expert naturalists, great with people, natural leaders & professional level photographers. Job Requirements:
Bachelors Degree or Higher
2 years minimum experience leading multi-day trips
Own Professional Photography Gear
Own Cell Phone w/ data plan
Wilderness First Responder
Strong Knowledge of Landscape & Wildlife Photography
Strong knowledge of Lightroom & Photoshop
Leader demonstrated ability to lead and manage groups
Strong Public Speaker, Teacher, Educator
You must have prior experience in each location you want to run trips. For example: Zion, Bryce, Glacier, Yosemite, Yellowstone etc.
Strong Knowledge & Experience in all locations you would like to guide
Good with people & strong group management
Clean Driving record & Current Drivers License
Strong facilitation, and organization skills are essential.
Job Expectations:
-It is critical to be on time with every guest interaction. Including pre-trip contact, the orientation meeting, and every aspect of the trip.
-We require a commitment of at least 3 years. Each trip has its own unique flavor. Each trip you learn would be a big investment of your time and knowledge and benefit you as well as us to run multiple trips. For example, we run several Yellowstone and Grand Teton Tours throughout the year and will continue to run those trips for successive years to come. For example: once you are hired for a specific trip you can keep running that trip year after year.
-Demonstrate professionalism and a high level of courtesy to our guests, National park staff, restaurant and hotel staff and any public figures you engage with through out the job.
-Safety and risk management: You are expected to take an active part in maintaining safety, identifying and reporting accidents. You are responsible for carrying and understanding the correct use of emergency and safety equipment including but not limited to First Aid Kit, Bear Spray, Satellite Phone and crampons.
-At least one or two shadow trips are required for every new or incoming guide. Shadow pay will be paid at a fixed rate of $75 per day. The number of shadow trips required will be based on experience and performance.
-All guides working new trips will be required to know the ins and outs of each trip. You will have hiked each trail, driven the roads on the trip itinerary, visited each hotel and restaurant that is part of the tour, as well as visited each photograph location and be knowledgeable about the lighting conditions for each location.
Job Benefits:
-Paid Travel (air or mileage from major hub to destination)
-Hotels / Camping on travel, prep & refresher days before the clients travel day and all lodging / meals during the trip
-Hotel or campground fees (depending on weather and availability) for refresher days
-Refresher Days - meaning re-orienting yourself with the work area i.e. Yellowstone, Glacier, etc. locating trailheads, driving the roads, finding trailheads, hotels and restaurants we use on the tour. Also gathering specific interpretation information for that area, for example attending ranger talks, visiting visitor centers.
-Prep days are paid at a rate of $75/day if running a lodge-based tour.
-Prep days for camping tours which require more extensive packing, logistics, and preparation requirements on the clients travel day i.e. your prep day would be paid at your current daily guide rate.
-If you work with clients & travel on the same day pay is at your current guide rate
-Refresher days are usually mandatory and are paid at your current daily guide rate
-Flexible Schedule: Part-Time to Full-Time opportunities exist
-Starting rate of $150 per contract day
-Benefit/daily pay increases are available based on experience, commitment, and performance.
-Our guests are encouraged to show appreciation to their guides by paying them gratuities (and these are often GREAT!) but BCJ does not guarantee gratuities.
-Pay ranges from $150 to $220 per day depending on experience, performance, dedication & history with the company
