General Job Description

The Lead Structural Engineer position is a hands-on job requiring excellent technical, organizational and communication skills. This position sits in our Denver, CO office, reports to the Operations/Engineering Manager and will work closely with Sales, Project Management and Purchasing.

Relocation to the Denver, CO area is required.

The Lead Structural Engineer will be part of an international and multidisciplinary team developing bulk material handling projects for the mining, cement, alternative fuels, and ports/terminals industries. More specifically, the Lead Structural Engineer will be responsible for the structural design (during sales and execution phases) of conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders and plant related structures.

Responsibilities

During the sales phase, responsibilities include:

  • Review bid documentation (client's specifications) and report findings and potential deviations/clarifications.
  • Develop structural concept during the initial equipment layout phase, coordinating with the mechanical discipline to ensure that mechanical loads, functionality, maintainability, and safety are considered.
  • Perform preliminary structural steel calculations for the development of quantity estimates. Ensure that local codes and client's specifications are met.
  • Supervise and/or coordinate with other BEUMER structural/mechanical team members located in North America, Europe and Asia.
  • Work with procurement for the inquiry of steel fabrication by providing technical inputs and performing technical bid evaluations.

During the execution phase, responsibilities include:

  • Consolidate structural concept and criteria for a given equipment by coordinating with the mechanical discipline to ensure that mechanical loads, equipment functionality, maintainability, and safety are considered.
  • Perform and report detailed structural steel calculations (using RStab/RFEM software) for the creation of detailed 3D models (using Advance Steel software) and MTO (material take off). Ensure that local codes and client's specifications are met.
  • Create or review foundation-load drawings, detail drawings (may incl. connections) and typical drawings. Develop design criteria and fabrication specifications. Ensure that local codes and client's specifications are met.
  • Supervise and/or coordinate with other BEUMER structural/mechanical team members located in North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Sub-contract and manage additional project resources from external engineering companies.
  • Work with BEUMER procurement team to contract steel fabricators by providing technical inputs and performing technical bid evaluations. Support QA/QC in the development and execution of project specific quality plan.
  • Collaborate with steel fabricators and detailers to ensure design conformance. Support the development of a strategy for pre/trial assembly and constructability.
  • Review and approve shop drawings and erection drawings from steel fabricators.
  • Coordinate between steel fabricator, engineering, and erection teams to ensure that design is interpreted and implemented correctly, and design drawings are updated to incorporate changes. Respond to shop and field RFI's.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Mentor junior engineers/designers.
  • Pro-actively assist Operations/Engineering Manager developing department (structural engineering) processes and tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • 5 years of professional experience.
  • Expert user of structural calculation software such as RStab/RFEM (Preferred), STAAD.Pro, SAP2000 or RISA-3D.
  • Experience in CAD design programs such as Advance Steel (Preferred), Tekla and AutoCAD.
  • Passionate and self-motivated.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Be flexible and eager to learn.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as required, up to 20% of the time
  • Desired experience within designing steel structures for high seismic locations, designing concrete foundations, estimating construction and erection efforts, designing bulk material handling equipment.
