Job Description: Groomer
Position Summary
A groomer provides bathing and grooming services. He or she also pays close attention to pets' status such as signs of stress, identifies any medical concerns (i.e. fleas, ear infections, lumps, skin conditions, etc.), promptly notifying technicians and veterinarians when a pet needs medical attention. The groomer interacts with clients in person and by phone. Proper record documentation and accurate completion of grooming forms and cage cards is critical.
Reports to: Practice Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Grooming, 95%:
Check all pets entering the hospital for presence of fleas and/or ticks
Document grooming style, blades used, shampoo and general condition of pet in chart
Perform baths, cuts, nail trims, ear cleaning and external anal gland expression
Study proportions of dog to determine most appropriate cutting pattern to achieve desired style
Walk grooming patients if appropriate
Label pets appropriately in cages
Mark charges on invoices and next grooming appointment
Maintain professional, neat and clean work area
Maintain dryers, blades, clippers and scissors
Use proper lifting techniques when placing pet on grooming table and fit grooming collar on pet to hold animal to table
Use proper restraint and techniques to calm animal
Notify a technician or doctor of any health concerns, document in the record and talk with client
Know sanitation requirements
Client Communication & Service Duties, 5%:
Greet and check-in clients in a friendly manner
Read written or receive oral instructions from client to determine clipping pattern desired
Have all appropriate consent forms signed
Handle client calls about grooming questions
Handle client complaints about grooming
Provide grooming report card
Attend all staff meetings
Seek continuing education and skill development in grooming
Educational Requirements & Skills Needed
Educational Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience in grooming and bathing animals, proper restraint techniques
Skills Needed:
Ability to read and comprehend instructions
Ability to communicate with clients in person and by phone, e-mail and written reports
Good communication skills to talk with clients about appropriate cuts, bathing and pedicures
Able to do all breed cuts for pet and show quality dogs and cats
Write legibly in records
Promptly communicate any pet health problems with technicians and doctors
Physical Obligations:
Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
Endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods
Type information for patient records and prescription labels into the computer
Able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment
Take safety precautions for exposure to toxins, drugs, anesthesia and radiation
