Lead Educator Job Announcement Community Roots Coop

Community Roots Coop, a parent-led educational cooperative in Charlottesville, VA, seeks a Lead Educator to help serve a child-centered classroom. This paid position will work alongside parent volunteers and our current paid Educational Facilitator. The ideal candidate will be comfortable within an inquiry based model. This approach emphasizes students role in learning. Rather than a teacher telling students what they need to know based on predefined standards, at Community Roots Coop students are encouraged to explore content, ask questions, and work together to solve problems and explore ideas.

We serve a broad age span (ages 5-12) and are seeking a skilled and passionate educator who will work with children one-on-one and in age flexible cohorts. While efficacy across the age span is desired, we are especially interested in experience and/or interest in working with elementary aged children (5-12). Candidates must demonstrate an ability to design creative lessons and units that respond to childrens interests, with respect to developmental stages and learning styles.

A successful candidate will embrace our communitys values and mission. Community Roots Coop is a nontraditional setting that does not use a specific curriculum. The Lead Educator will have the ability to creatively cultivate his or her own lessons and units. While the position is flexible and offers considerable autonomy, there is an expectation of daily co-planning and active collaboration with parents who serve as volunteer administrators and enrichment educators. Strong interpersonal skills are essential in our collaborative model. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated capacity to self motivate and to work with others.

Community Roots Coop explicitly centers on creating support and safety for children of color, while serving children of all backgrounds. For us this means that all children should see themselves reflected in their curricula, peers, and teachers. It also means that all community members share the responsibility of building authentic diversity. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
