The Department of Engineering and Systems and Environment is seeking an IT Support Staff to assist with day-to-day IT requests. As the home to UVA's recognized undergraduate and graduate degree programs in civil and systems engineering, we are a leader in the study of human and socio-technical systems. Our faculty and students create innovations that will help address societys most wicked problems, which are often emergent, large scale, and complex in areas ranging from public health to smart cities to environmental resilience. The selected applicant will serve in variety of capacities to include helpdesk support, web development, A/V technical assistance, technical writing, system engineering, quality assurance analysis, and will also assist with department inventory. The preferred candidate will have one or more years of work experience in a technical capacity, preferably in an academic environment.

Additional duties will include:
  • Review current and proposed departmental/user hardware and software systems; develop and maintain systems for the various constituencies within the unit.
  • Analyze proposals which consist of objectives, scope, and user expectations; gather facts, analyze data, and prepare proposal synopses comparing alternatives in terms of cost, time, and availability of resources.
  • Solve problems on computer applications and systems for students, faculty, and staff; provide technical assistance to departmental user support staff.
  • Provide individual and/or group instruction and training to students, faculty, and/or staff on computer technologies.
  • Provide technical support for research and development initiatives and for the implementation of new technologies for adoption.
  • Write structured programs, as appropriate, using technologically current programming languages to support systems.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Ability to work full-time on-site in Charlottesville, VA.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or a related discipline and at least 1 year of relevant experience. OR Associates degree and 3 years of relevant experience OR High school diploma and 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of tech support and management.
  • Intermediate/Advanced level knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.
  • The ability to train on and learn new computerized systems.
  • Keen attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate and work alongside faculty, staff, students, vendors, and outside guests of the University in an effective and professional manner.
  • Capacity to handle multiple assignments with critical deadlines and changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in research computing, lab management.
  • Website design and maintenance experience.
  • Vendor relations experience.

Anticipated hiring range: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour depending upon relevant experience.
