The University of Virginia School of Law seeks an entry-level Help Desk Technician to join the Law IT Team. The Help Desk Technician will work closely with a team of IT professionals at the Law School to provide customer support to Law School faculty, staff, students, and guests. The Help Desk Technician will provide support at the Law IT service desk, assisting with walk-in, phone, and email requests for assistance with mobile devices, laptops, desktops, and software. The Help Desk Technician will also provide IT support for events at the Law School. This is a new position, reporting to Law IT's User Support Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide technical support to Law School faculty, staff, students, and guests by resolving first-tier common desktop, software, hardware, and communications issues in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Triage/route second- and third-tier issues to the appropriate technical personnel.
  • Accurately document user support requests and resolutions in Law IT's help desk ticketing system.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with IT professionals in areas such as network services, software systems engineering, and application development.
  • Provide high-quality customer service through courteous and professional communication.
  • Support and maintain effective relationships with consistent follow-up and documentation.
  • Perform system upgrades and new system deployments when needed.
  • Provide basic application and system training for users.
  • Provide technical support for events during normal office hours and occasional weekend and evening hours.

Professional Experience and Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Previous work experience in a university or school environment or similar setting preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to use discretion and good judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demands:

The position requires the ability to lift computer equipment and printers up to 50lbs and connect and disconnect computers and peripherals under desks. In addition, this job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/walking (distance: 1 - 2 miles/day), climbing (ladder, steps), reaching, and the use of both a keyboard and touch screen equipment.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check at time of offer per University Policy.
