Instructional Designer for Inclusive Teaching (focused on STEM Education) will be a key member of the University's Driving Change team. Driving Change is a large-scale, department-centered transformation initiative supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The overall goal of Driving Change is to improve culture in STEM departments so that all students can excel, including those from groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines.

The incumbent will work closely with a team of faculty, institutional designers, educational developers and other partners across the university to support STEM departments in Arts & Sciences and Engineering as they examine their courses, curricula, and climates, and identify changes they want to make to foster student success. Moreover, Instructional Designer will help departments develop a plan for change and implement change projects. This role will also interface with and be able to collaborate and learn from other STEM related activities at the University, including those related to the HHMI Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) Initiative.

Specific duties will include:
  • In collaboration with the UVA-HHMI team, develop strategic plans to promote faculty engagement in HHMI work and programs
  • Consult with individual faculty and curricular teams in design and redesign of assignments, assessments, courses, activities, and curricula to improve accessibility, and remove barriers to student learning, belonging, and success
  • Support faculty use of learning technologies to achieve teaching and learning outcomes
  • Research and promote evidence-based and innovative approaches to maximize flexibility, resilience, inclusion, and equitable access to learning
  • Design and deliver educational workshops and materials in collaboration with the other members of the UVA-HHMI team
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Qualifications

Successful candidates must possess these minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • 5 years of directly relevant work experience
  • Deep knowledge of inclusive pedagogies and design frameworks
  • Experience working on curricular or instructional initiatives that advance inclusive excellence in higher education
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with a range of stakeholders including faculty and staff
  • Experience with or willingness to learn a variety of learning technologies which support teaching and learning both in the classroom and online
  • High level of motivation, self-direction, and ability to work independently

Competitive candidates will possess some of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in a STEM field or Science Education or relevant experience in STEM faculty development at the postsecondary level
  • Experience developing and delivering workshops focused on inclusive teaching practices
  • Experience contributing to assessment of pedagogical innovations at the course or department level

The position will be part of the A&S Learning Design and Technology (LDT) Team, with opportunities to collaborate with instructional designers and educational developers within LDT and across the university. The position will report to Judy Giering, Assistant Dean for Instructional Initiatives and Academic Technology.

This is an in-person position, located in Charlottesville, VA. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

This position is a restricted position, and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated length based on current funding is 4 years. Anticipated hiring range is $75,000-$89,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
