The Center for Public Health Genomics at the University of Virginia is seeking a talented systems administrator to join our research administration staff. Reporting to the Assistant Director, this is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary position with responsibility for managing research and administrative desktop systems, configuration of Linux systems, and research data software and storage. The position liaises with centralized University IT organizations to implement research environments on desktops/laptops, Linux servers, and high-performance clusters, tailored for the needs of individual research projects and labs while ensuring compliance with university and school policies, and human subjects research protocols. The range of systems and technology management responsibilities linked to this position means that it offers a diverse range of day-to-day activities and problem-solving challenges.

The Center for Public Health Genomics is a research center in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, Virginia) comprised of researchers actively conducting cutting-edge research in the genetic and genomic factors that underlie human diseases. The Center has more than 100 members with 14 resident faculty who supervise molecular biology and high-performance computational labs to perform research, while training graduate, postdoctoral, and undergraduate students. This is a highly desirable opportunity to join a very successful and dynamic research center, where the systems and information technology environment will be critical in helping to drive new discoveries and research growth.

The position will require at least some on-site presence in Charlottesville, VA but may have opportunities for hybrid on-site/remote working.

Minimum qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, biology, or related scientific discipline OR recognized relevant industry certification(s) OR demonstrably greater hands-on experience of managing desktop and servers over many years.
  • At least three years of prior computer systems administration experience including significant experience in managing a desktop environment in a Windows Domain.
  • Experience working in a Linux environment.

Job Responsibilities
  • Specify, order, and configure desktop/laptop units for faculty/staff including Windows and Mac operating systems. Maintain desktop image for standard applications and software, and configure units to meet UVA security standards and posture checking. Operate and maintain automated/semi-automated systems for desktop/laptop unit patching and upgrades. Maintain unit inventory.
  • Manage software installs and code environment on linux servers. This could include research software such as R, python, and third party compiled code from external research labs and institutions. Manage research data across multiple file systems including project-level permissions. Monitor research data storage. Develop server and data management plans for the Center to align with projected Center growth and evolving centralized University storage and server management services.
  • Assist research labs with large data transfers, both inbound and outbound, to other national research organizations and universities.
  • Ensure that the Center remains compliant with University and School IT polices including in the areas of security, resilience, and system availability suggesting changes to operating procedures and technical resource management as needed.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to Center staff at all levels for desktop and server issues, using a ticketed help desk service.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Professional Competencies:
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of center members, including faculty, students, and administrative staff, as well as university IT peers and leadership.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Independent problem-solving and the ability to research solutions to technical issues as they arise.
  • Use of office administrative applications to create documentation such as SOPs, as well as managing desktop, server, and storage inventory.
Technical competencies:
  • Proficiency with installing and configuring Windows and Mac O/S and managing PCs in a Windows Domain.
  • Familiarity with a desktop management software platform, for example, SCCM, KACE, or JAMF.
  • Comfortable navigating Linux operating systems including file system configuration, code compilation and application installs, and secondary systems administration.
  • Ability to manage inventory and run a ticketed helpdesk.

Preferred/additional qualifications:
  • Higher degree in a related science, computer science, or engineering field.
  • Experience with large storage systems, 100s of terabytes to petabyte scale.
  • Programming experience of at least one scripting or compiled language eg: awk, perl, python, C/C
  • Prior experience in the biomedical industry or a scientific research organization.
