The School of Data Science (SDS) at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Research Computing Engineer to support faculty in growing the amount and scope of the school's research portfolio. This position plays the role of facilitating the computational resources necessary to do so and in helping to draft the documents required for grant submissions and subsequent support of the funded research projects. Maintenance and operation of computational resources is outside of the scope (eg: system administration). Boutique coaching, consultation, and solution architecture is within scope.

Responsibilities:

1. Consult with PIs to determine practicable computational solutions for research

  • Help acquire, develop, and implement the computational tools needed to support research projects in SDS
  • Provide self-service or session training to support research projects in SDS including but not limited to guidance on the use of standardized coding practices (e.g., Python, Jupyter notebook, etc), development of HPC practices such as containers, cloud computing best practices, etc.
  • Maintain records of faculty research computing allocations and budgets. Produce quarterly or semester reports for the Associate Dean for Research
  • Project future research computing needs and provide inputs to the SDS research strategic plan

2. Evaluate new HPC tools and resources as they become available in order to inform individual consultations and strategic planning. Collaborate with SDS Director of Information Technology to best leverage infrastructure support for tools and resources.

3. Capstone and experiential learning support

  • Make recommendations about optimal computing resources and procedures for capstone program as well as individual projects
  • Make decisions with regard to allocating SDS service units and resources obtained through other agreements
  • Offer tutorials and set-up help as needed
  • Maintain awareness of curricular matters (e.g. what tools are being used in BS/MS/PhD classes)

4. Grant Preparation Support

  • Assist in preparing grant documents, such as Facilities, Equipment and Other Resources or Data Management Plan
  • Advise on computation cost estimates for Budget preparation

5. Provide short course training for SDS students, faculty, and post-docs

  • Coordinate this training with the Libraries and Research Computing

6. Support efforts to automate faculty reporting, research evaluation

  • Support the integration of systems to allow the ADR to assess and plan SDS research strategies; examples include linking Huron and ORCID data to annual reporting processes (Salesforce)

7. Supervise graduate-level research software development interns

8. Serve as liaison between SDS Research team and IT team

9. Serve as liaison between SDS and UVA Research Computing

Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Data Science or related discipline
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience working within the data science and information technology field
  • Experience with cloud computing required
  • Knowledge of cluster computing preferred
  • Experience of working with the grant writing process in a high education context preferred

Anticipated hiring range: $95,000-$105,000
