Senior VMware Engineer

The University of Virginia's Information Technology Services (ITS) seeks an experienced VMware engineer with a passion for Hyperconverged infrastructure, and the continuing development of technological skills. This hybrid work position (primarily remote), will be part of a team that shares responsibilities and focuses on supporting existing and deploying new privately hosted cloud servers in a repeatable fashion using PowerShell and code, developing further integration & automation for server and application deployment, and private cloud solutions for ITS. This position will work closely with other university ITS public cloud teams (AWS/Azure).

Team Based Duties include:
  • Provisioning, troubleshooting, supporting VMware & Windows servers.
  • Maintaining and developing automation with PowerShell & code.
  • Monitor performance and availability of complex systems.
  • Work with customers to determine needs and help implement their services in an automated fashion.
  • Develop and architect in conjunction with other groups a container management solution.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation approximately one week out of every eight.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and at least 4 years of related experience OR High School degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • VMware & Windows system administration experience
  • Experience with Deploying and maintaining VMware & windows server solutions via script or code.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language (PowerShell, PowerCLI, Python, etc.)
  • Working understanding of TCP/IP networking and firewalls

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in a large enterprise IT environment, preferably higher education
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow, Blackboard, and/or other Enterprise help desk systems
  • Experience with VMware Aria (vRealize)
  • Experience with Kubernetes or VMware Tanzu
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with implementing security/compliance standards (e.g. CIS, NIST)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $95k - $110k

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
