Position Title: Systems Navigator for Mental Health Therapeutic Docket (a collaborative jail diversion program in the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County)
Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week)
Mental Health Therapeutic Docket Background The Therapeutic Docket is a jail diversion program for people with mental illness facing misdemeanor charges in either the City of Charlottesville or Albemarle County. It is a collaborative effort between General District Court, the City and County Public Defenders and Commonwealths Attorneys, Offender Aid and Restoration: Jefferson Area Community Corrections, Partner for Mental Health, and Region 10. Upon successful completion of the docket, participants chargers are either dropped or reduced, and no period of incarceration is ordered.
Position Summary The Systems Navigator helps people experiencing mental illness who are participating in the Therapeutic Docket build social support and community inclusion while helping them navigate the local mental health, physical health, human services, and criminal justice systems so they may lead healthier, meaningful, and self-directed lives in their home communities. As an unbiased and independent broker of services and supports, the Systems Navigator will help clients identify and successfully access community resources necessary to reach self-defined recovery goals, improve their social determinants of health, and successfully complete the Therapeutic Docket program. The Systems Navigator also teaches self-advocacy skills to clients, and, when necessary, advocates on behalf of clients to help them receive the services they want and for which they are eligible. The Systems Navigator understands structural racism and recognizing its impact on mental health.
