The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia invites applications for the Director of Information Technology and School Systems (ITSS) position. The Director of Information Technology and School Systems (ITSS) sets the strategic vision for and implements IT support services as well as technology, training, and process automation to advance the mission and operational effectiveness of the Batten School. Through leadership of the internal ITSS team and collaboration with UVA's central IT team, technology resources, broad initiatives, and other schools across the university, the Director ITSS directly contributes to the incredible student experience, cutting edge discovery and ambitious goals of the Batten school to increase mission impact through innovative teaching, research, and engagement.
In addition to charting the path forward with technology and critical business processes, the Director of ITSS is responsible for the day-to-day management of technology operations and leading a team of staff and student workers to provide superior technology and AV support service to the Batten community. This position is a designated full-time role based on grounds in Charlottesville, VA and reports to the Associate Dean for Administration of the Batten School.Responsibilities:- Deliver an exceptional IT support experience for the school's faculty, students, staff and guests.
- Establish the technology and business automation strategy that advances Batten School strategic objectives and supports the University of Virginia's overall mission. Directly contribute to the school's strategic planning process including both short- and long-term initiatives. Provide strategic/operational direction for designing, planning, implementing and maintaining IT and business process capabilities and outcomes.
- Direct investment, implementation, and maintenance of specific school technologies including Salesforce CRM, Tableau, and Drupal CMS (for website management), and adoption of university-wide technologies such Microsoft Teams, Workday, Adaptive, and QlikSense.
- Work closely with the Communications team and contracted web-design firms to ensure that the Batten School website remains fully functional.
- Develop and manage a comprehensive, service-oriented approach to digital and live event audio-visual and content capture support on behalf of the Batten School.
- Participate in negotiating budgets at the departmental or organizational level and manage budgets across units. Oversee the implementation efforts of new technology and/or communications equipment or services. Prepare and administer technology budgets and approves expenditures, ensuring proper accounting practices are adhered to.
- Identify and facilitate strategic partnerships between the IT function and various groups within the University to ensure quality, consistency, service level, utilization, and availability of IT resources across the University.
- Create opportunities for technology professionals from various disciplines to communicate and collaborate on initiatives to develop a more institutionalized framework for provisioning technology and process automation services. Develop relationships with technology professionals in peer institutions/organizations to exchange information and ideas.
- Serve as a senior representative for the school and liaison between the technology function and the senior management. Presents proposals for technology equipment/services/risk prevention that support the school's strategic direction, short and/or long-range initiatives and priorities.
- Provide leadership and guidance to staff in the planning, design, development and implementation of technology projects, including team leadership and communication. Develop trusting relationships with senior leadership as well as faculty, staff and other stakeholders. Communicate priorities and expectations.
- Oversee the use and impact from centrally provisioned technology resources and services.
- Provide opportunities to contribute to the University's long-term information technology needs and to make recommendations to the University's senior leadership on technology strategies, equipment and application requirements for optimal performance.
- Provide opportunities to contribute to the development of institution wide information technology policies, procedures or processes and to support the implementation of same.
- Review and evaluate recommendations for project feasibility assessments, cost/benefit calculations, risk factors or situations, and authorizes technology related projects, including purchases, implementation plans and strategies.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
- Bachelor's degree with ten years of experience.
- At least 4 years of proven experience delivering strategic results through leading a technology portfolio while supporting appropriate IT infrastructure service levels.
- Experience with Salesforce CRM.
- Must have broad experience in multiple operating platforms and systems, preferably in the education industry.
- Focused on delivering an exceptional customer experience through data driven decision making and an agile continuous improvement mindset.
- Experience working in Microsoft Windows Server environments and Microsoft desktop applications.
- A solid understanding of PC/Mac configuration, TCP/IP, routing and routed protocols, firewalls, switches, VLANs, wide area network protocols, and network security.
- Superior written & verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills is a must.
