Research Programmer, The Human-AI Technology Lab

The Human-AI Technology (HAI) lab at the University of Virginia, under the direction of Afsaneh Doryab, PhD seeks applicants for a full-time research programmer to start September 1, 2021 (specific start date is negotiable).

The HAI lab research is focused on computational modeling of human behavior with applications in health and wellness. To that end, we conduct studies in a variety of populations and chronic diseases (cancer patients, mental health disorders, students, etc.) using both lab-based and remote (web and mobile) data collections. Duties include:
  • Programming and Data Management
  • Mobile and web development
  • Backend development and server management
  • Write code in Python and R to extract, transform, and clean data and construct variables for analysis
  • Conduct exploratory data analyses and diagnostics and communicate findings and recommendations to the research team
  • Perform descriptive and inferential analysis of data
  • Prepare tables, graphs and other data visualizations to present results
  • Assist in the definition, specification, and documentation of data and security requirements
  • Work closely with principal investigators to develop simulation model specifications
  • Design, implement, debug, and test simulation models using Python and R
  • Provide detailed documentation and flowcharts for simulation models and explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience

Position Requirements
  • A bachelors degree in computer science, data science, or another relevant field. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Programming experience using Python, R, or a similar language
  • Experience using at least one statistical programming language for the analysis of structured datasets, such as Python libraries (including Pandas, SciPy, NumPy, Scikit-Learn) or R.
  • Experience with mobile and web development, using APIs
  • Quick to learn new technologies and scientific concepts and understand complex model/software dynamics
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to act professionally at all levels
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Organizational ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and to prioritize duties
  • Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information

COVID Vaccination Requirement
