The University of Virginia's Center for Behavioral Health & Technology (http://med.virginia.edu/bht) in the School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences is seeking a creative Senior Software Engineer 4 to lead efforts in developing and maintaining web and mobile-based applications for a growing number of medical and behavioral health conditions. This position will function as a program developer for web and mobile-based programs with responsibilities overseeing the planning, design, programming, and implementation of these programs. We are seeking an experienced software engineer to help build the next generation of technology-based health interventions.

Duties Include:
  • Produce and maintain department applications to accomplish business needs.
  • Function as senior developer, managing medium- to large scale or complex projects from start to finish.
  • Conduct program design, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.
  • Write code from specifications conforming to established methodology and standards.
  • Conduct unit tests and quality assurance of either new or modified applications.
  • Responsible for planning, analysis, design, engineering and development.
  • Have fully developed, regularly applied, advanced technical skills; highly complex, long-term and strategically significant activities; and significant latitude to devise the approach and method to performing assignments.
  • Work on longer-term, non-routine, more complex assignments.
  • Have the latitude to apply skills to solve most problems without review.
  • Devise the approach and method to performing assignments.
  • Able to work independently, seeking assistance when significant deviations are proposed or when unprecedented problems arise.
  • Develop approaches to problem-solving and anticipate/mitigate potential issues.
  • Train, serve as a resource, and provide guidance to Software Engineer 1, 2, and 3 employees on complex problems, processes, and policies.
  • Interact with fellow team members, coordinating team members, assigned student, faculty, and/or staff clients; external vendors or service providers, and external customers.

Minimum Requirements (Only need 1 of the below combinations):

1. High school diploma and 9 years of relevant web application development experience.

2. Associates degree and 7 years of relevant web application development experience.

3. Bachelors degree and 5 years of relevant web application development experience.

Relevant experience includes use of one or more of the following: Ruby on Rails; HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, ReactJS, Bootstrap, jQuery; Linux/Unix operating system environments; Unix command line tools; relational databases such as MySQL and Postgres; unit testing experience with Rspec; experience writing and consuming RESTful APIs; etc.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $87,000 - $95,000 depending upon relevant experience.Selected applicant also receives eligibility for full-time, University Staff benefits.
