Maxar is looking for a Data Scientist to join our team based in Herndon, VA. We have amazing talent in other areas of the development stack, and we need someone on the backend to help us bring our workflow to life.

Your Project: Our project develops a cloud-based mission support system focused on collecting data to provide near real-time analytic insights to end-users while continuously evolving analytics to address dynamic threats.

We are seeking a Staff/Senior Data Scientist to lead the development of statistical and machine learning models to support our customer's missions and operations. The ideal candidate will derive these models to detect kinematic behaviors leveraging live and historical data. Using these models, the candidate will develop and run simulations to inform the development team on approaches to incorporate analytics into the system.

What you'll do day-to-day (with your colleagues):
  • Lead the designing of analytic solutions that meet customer needs.
  • Enhance existing analytic solutions to ensure quality and performance.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify trends and patterns.
  • Perform data processing activities such as data cleansing (editing, validation, and imputation).
  • Select and implement appropriate statistical analysis and scoring metrics to evaluate the performance of existing/future algorithms.
  • Ensure algorithms are generalizable performing model fitting.
  • Derive and produce analytic reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement data visualization approaches for analysis, presentation, and end-user consumption.
  • Perform feature engineering, classifier optimization, event forecasting, and anomaly detection.
  • Interface with external stakeholders to decompose data science mission needs.
  • Produce analysis reports on results and approach and data science processes as needed.
  • Identify and leverage industry-standard tools and approaches for problem sets.

Minimum requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be willing and able to obtain a TS/SCI w/ CI Polygraph.
  • MS in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or another related discipline.
  • 2+ years of industry experience in the data science field (or BS in a related technical field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Data Science).
  • 5+ years of using data science programming languages (I.e. Python, R, etc.) and exposure to version control concepts.
  • Experience in data processing/cleansing and analyzing time series.
  • Demonstrable math experience in linear algebra, statistics, and probability.
  • Familiarity in applying machine learning algorithms and principles (linear regression) to time series and/or geospatial data.
  • Experience with scoring and measuring algorithm performance.
  • Familiarity with database/data file systems such as RDBMS and persistence and retrieval approaches.
  • Demonstrable presentation and communication skills of analytic results to various stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in working on teams following development methodologies such as Agile Scrum or Kanban.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with working with big data technologies such as Hadoop, HDFS, Map Reduce, Sqoop, Flume, Hive, etc.
  • Experience in data processing/data cleansing of geospatial data.
  • Strong experience with Python libraries such as pandas, Numpy, sci-kit-learn, matplotlib, scipy.
  • Data Visualization of multi-source, multi-dimensional data, and analytic results in both real-time and for presentations.
  • Experience conducting model feasibility research and algorithm development for machine learning.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.
  • Experience with time-series event forecasting.
  • Wide breadth of experience with machine learning algorithms and approaches.
  • Current knowledge of the latest industry trends; Ability to articulate trends and their potential clearly and confidently.
  • Experience with Deep Learning technologies (Pytorch, Keras, Tensorflow).
