The Engineer Associate demonstrates a working understanding of engineering disciplines including electronics, pneumatics, mechanical systems, information technology/networking, human anatomy and physiology. The Engineer Associate acts as point of contact between the department of Clinical Engineering and the Office of Project Management for complex projects; oversees the implementation of specialized medical and laboratory instrumentation and equipment modifications; analyzes and provides consultation on new medical and laboratory equipment needs; provides in-service teaching and training; conducts investigations of device related failures; analyzes complex medical or laboratory equipment to define corrective maintenance and to develop appropriate preventive maintenance procedures.
- Develops and maintains business relationship with clinical and ancillary service leaders.
- Conducts regular business review meetings and provides consultative information to enable sound technology strategies and decisions. Assists users in the technical operation of equipment and evaluates opportunities to improve or enhance technology adoption. Analyzes data to trigger training needs for clinical staff based upon repair trends and user errors. Prepares and conducts technical in-service programs, workshops, or seminars for clinical and medical staff on theory and operation of newly installed equipment. Supports biomedical research initiatives of physician and academic partners.
- Develops and maintains current access to expert knowledge of evolving and emerging medical technologies and provide consultation to clinicians and leadership.
- Forecasts and recommends emergent technologies for consideration by UVAHS leadership, consistent with the institutions mission, vision, and business objectives. Researches specific equipment types and prepare cost benefit and life cycle analyses. Conducts technology assessment studies and develops/edits white paper detailed analyses on evolving and emerging technologies. Implements new medical technology systems, processes and improvements in coordination with the Program Management Office. Coordinates equipment planning activities of Clinical Engineering Analyst and Clinical Engineer I to support renovation and new construction projects. Maintains medical equipment technology capital replacement plan in coordination with clinical and ancillary service leaders.
- Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority. Investigates and reports on incidents involving suspected equipment malfunctions, submit reports to MedSun (FDA). Coordinates activities related to devices recalls with vendors and clinical users. Participates in process improvement initiatives aimed at creating a safer patient care environment. Implements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties. Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge. Participates in Patient Safety committees as assigned.
- Ensures safe functioning of medical equipment in regulatory compliant environment of care
- Stays current with new regulations and ensures compliance with them. Participates in ad hoc projects to address new requirements. Oversees performance testing of complex medical, laboratory, and related equipment. Analyzes and summarize results in concise and communicable terms, recommend corrective action. Develops appropriate preventive maintenance or performance assurance protocols. Develops standards for medical devices, critical medical wiring, and patient headwalls and gas systems. Writes or edits policies related to medical equipment or its use as needed. Coordinates wireless frequencies, completes wireless registration.
- Manages medical device integration, interoperability, and networking.
- Develops and maintains knowledge of networking and information technology principles and their application to healthcare technology Supports interconnectivity initiatives between medical devices and information systems such as EMR, ADT, secondary alarm notifications systems, etc. Supports networked medical devices and maintains network integrity. Collaborates with IT Security to ensure medical device usage is secure, available, and reliable.
