At HII we build and maintain U.S. Navy readiness every day. Mission Technologies, a division of HII is currently seeking a Engineer to join our Newport News Direct Support Group. The selected candidate will support the Facility Operations at Newport News Shipbuilding that is primarily focused on Submarine Mechanical Engineering and design. The selected candidate will collaborate across various entities such as engineering and trades support within the E10 Submarine Engineering Department at the Newport News Shipyard.

What You Will Do

This position requires engineering experience to include planning, estimating, design, construction, and overhaul of US Naval Submarines in the areas of Structural Welding, Painting and Coatings, Mechanical and Weapons Systems and Engineering and Design Liaison with Trades and Testing Departments. Additional areas of responsibility include and are not limited to:
  • Provides high-level planning, design, and construction support for projects.
  • Responsible for interpreting Inspection Reports generated by Trades and Engineers, referencing drawings, development and approval of complex design criteria, calculations and final drawings issued for construction and overhaul.
  • Reviews and estimates installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs.
  • Requires surveillance of contracted design firms and contracted construction work.
  • Inspects or directs the inspection of construction and installation progress to ensure conformance to established drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Provides technical work instructions, commissioning and construction checklists, and turnover of assigned project work.
  • Requires coordination and management of multiple technical functions including mechanical, electrical, industrial engineering disciplines and NNS Maintenance and Operations Department.
  • Requires strong project management, communication, organizational and computer skills.
  • Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes.
  • Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics).
  • Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data.
  • Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports.
  • May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

What You Must Have

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and 0 years of relevant professional/exempt experience. Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Engineering experience related to Civil or Mechanical type projects.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting Engineering Drawings and Schematics
  • Ability to work in a team environment planning and coordinating with other functional departments across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Bonus Points For Having!

  • Fundamentals of Engineering license is preferred.
  • Experience in coordinating multi-trade projects is a plus.
  • Heavy industrial facilities experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of National Building Codes, AISC, ACI, ADA, and OSHA regulations is preferred.
  • Project management, communication, organizational and computer skills.
  • Experience in developing specifications for purchase and installation of all project products and materials.

Physical Requirements

Office, industrial or shipboard environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances. Lifting and moving of materials not to exceed the guidelines set for one man lift.
