Winter Engineering Program (Coastal Transportation Inc. - Seattle, WA)

Virginia, Hampton roads 00000 Hampton roads USA

Vacancy expired!

Coastal Transportation, Inc, owns five freighters, ranging from 225' to 260' long. We deliver cargo from our terminal in Seattle to towns in Western Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, such as Sandpoint, Chignik, King Cove, Cold Bay, False Pass, and Dutch Harbor. We are currently hiring for our Winter Engineer Program.

We are looking to hire individuals who are mechanically inclined, including wipers and/or QMEDs, for winter relief work. Coastal will provide several weeks of practical shoreside training in both engineering and cargo for successful applicants before they are placed on the vessels.

Shoreside training for these positions will begin during the first week of January 2019, with the first trip sailed to be in mid-January. Interviews for these positions will begin during the first week of December 2018, with offers made to successful applicants by mid-December. We anticipate being able to offer at least three trips of work to successful candidates.

A QMED needs a Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) from the Coast Guard. Unlicensed assistant engineers or wipers do not need an MMD. A.B.s, deckhands, QMEDs, and wipers all load cargo on and off the boats, act as lookout, and perform maintenance work such as painting and splicing rope. QMEDs and wipers tend to work more in the engine room when the boat is traveling, but they work cargo as much as anyone else while at port. For crew members on our boats, each work day is at least 12 hours long and usually much longer.

Two-thirds of the trip is underway time, standing watches, doing cleaning, and maintenance. One-third of the 24-day trip is spent in cargo operations. Cargo operations are rough physical work in an extreme environment. You must be able to lift heavy weights, up to 100 pounds. The main duties during cargo operation are: driving yard and stay cargo gear; operating lift trucks; slinging loads; working with lashing chain, chain binders, and dunnage; and sweeping and cleaning cargo holds. This is a fast-paced job, suitable for high-energy individuals. Carefully read the physical requirements of the job, which can be found on our website at: www.cticrew.com/jobs.

A trip is usually 24 days long. Between trips the crew generally gets 1 to 7 days off in Seattle. These positions are considered relief positions, with an anticipated three trips for successful hires.

Our pay scale is:

PositionStarting (Starting wage may be more, DOE)

QMED$280/day

Wiper$200/day

After a trial period, employees are eligible for medical /dental plan and a 401k retirement plan. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug screening. Our operation is drug and alcohol free.
