The National Space Systems Engineering Division provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders at the highest levels of government on space architectures, policy and strategy, developmental planning, system of systems engineering, and threat reduction to help shape the future space missions across the national security space (NSS) enterprise.

As the Principal Director of the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Support subdivision, you will lead a diverse organization providing deep technical expertise and analysis-based decision support to senior leaders within the Department of the Air Force Headquarters in the Pentagon. The successful candidate will lead direct technical and analytical support to the following organizations within DAF:
  • Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration (SAF/SQ)
  • Secretary of the Air Force Systems Analysis Office (SAF/SA)
  • Department of the Air Force Chief Architect's Office (DAF/CAO)
  • Headquarters Air Force Directorate of Plans and Requirements (HAF/A5)
  • Headquarters Air Force Installations and Mission Support (HAF/A7)

Work Location

This is a hybrid position requiring presence in the Pentagon most days with the possibility of up to 2 days remote each week.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Overall leadership and management of Aerospace's DAF support organization. Develop subdivision objectives and strategy consistent with corporate goals and initiatives and customer expectations. Provide direction and planning for achieving both strategic and tactical goals.
  • Establish trusted relationships with key senior space leaders, especially the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration. Establish and maintain Aerospace's positive reputation with new and existing customers as a problem solver and thought leader. Anticipate future DAF customer needs and evolve an agile, high-quality technical and enterprise support work force (on-site and matrix) to respond at speed.
  • Deliver superb decision support capabilities and products to DAF customers. Lead and support cross-corporation and cross-organizational teams to execute studies and analysis activities of national significance. Foster appropriate cooperation and coordination across the space enterprise to help assure enterprise mission success.
  • Provide technical leadership to develop budget and policy position papers and respond to questions from the White House, Congress, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Intelligence Community.
  • Provide strategic leadership and support for planning and implementation of policy, acquisition, and requirements initiatives, developing architectural alternatives, assessing system budgets and schedules, and rationalizing investment portfolios, as needed.
  • Operate DAF support organization according to Aerospace core principles; creating and instilling a culture characterized by agility, speed, information sharing and continuous learning.
  • Drive and facilitate cross customer coordination for inter-organizational teams for Aerospace Engineering Technology Group (ETG), Center for Space Policy, and other groups
  • Provide leadership for team members, setting expectations and direction, mentoring, providing critical feedback, and coaching aimed at developing an agile technical staff.

What You Need to Be Successful

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering or equivalent is required
  • 12 or more years of progressively demonstrated engineering and policy experience, including multi-disciplinary systems engineering in a program oversight environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including team building/leadership, conflict resolution, staffing and customer relationship building.
  • Broad technical and some specific technical expertise relevant to Aerospace DAF customers.
  • Experience supporting and/or leading technical study teams examining topics of national significance.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with senior government customers (flag or SES level) from diverse organizations.
  • Proven ability to network with contractors, other government agencies, the various Aerospace program offices, and ETG to address issues and provide the customer with the best available technical and programmatic analyses
  • Excellent written communication skills - organize complex materials and concepts in clear and logical manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills - clear, concise, persuasive; builds consensus through speaking; polished, professional style.
  • This position requires an active TS/SSBI security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
  • Ability to travel as required

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • Advanced technical and/or business degree
  • In-depth knowledge of roles played by the Department of the Air Force, the U.S. Space Force, the Office of the Secretary of Defense; the Office of the Director of National Intelligence; the National Reconnaissance Office; the Services; the Joint Staff; and other government organizations in development and operations of the national security enterprise .
  • Experience in space system acquisition.
  • Experience in the operational use of space systems for DoD missions.
  • Familiarity with national security system procurement processes, including the Defense Acquisition System (DAS); Programming, Planning, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE); and the Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS).
  • Experience supporting development and/or implementation of national space policy.
  • Previous experience in the Pentagon.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial success cultivating and establishing new customer relationships and meaningful associated work.
  • Applicable SAP/SAR accesses.
